If you want to experience the real Andalucia, avoiding the mass tourism of the costas, then Sanlucar de Barrameda is an ideal place to visit and experience. The apartment is in a quiet location in the historic centre of town amidst the centuries old convents, churches and palaces and no more than a 3 minute walk from excellent cafes, bars and restaurants in the main squares: the Plaze de Roque and the Plaza del Cabildo. The beaches are a 10-15 minute walk from the apartment. It can accommodate up to 7 people. Internally it has been furnished and equipped to a very high standard in the local Andalusian style, with a private garage for your car. It is now very difficult to find parking in the centre of Sanlucar, so a private garage is essential if you are coming by car.

Sanlucar has been described as ‘a community in a state of grace’. It is located in the far south of Spain on the Atlantic, on the Costa de la Luz, where the great Guadalquivir river meets the Atlantic. North Africa is not far away. On the other side of the estuary lies the Doñana national park, which is Europe’s largest wetlands, wildlife park. The apartment is adjacent to centuries old convents, churches and palaces. The town is known for its great food, fine wine, lovely beaches, a warm climate and a people with a passion for life that is always enthralling.

Notes: In winter months there is a radiator for every room including the bathrooms, but excluding the kitchen. The apartment is equipped with an extensive collection of books, music cds, and DVDs. There is also a high quality range of crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, utensils, and serving dishes. There is also a juicer, coffee machine, toaster, kettle, and food mixer in addition to the other kitchen equipment listed above. There iis also a Welcome Pack in the apartment for your arrival consisting of: tea, coffee, milk, bread ,butter, jam, crisps, oranges, bottle of manzanilla, beer, and a 5 litre bottle of water.

Historic buildings: The apartment is in the heart of the old town, adjacent to the oldest church in Sanlucar. The church dates from the 13th century and has an impressive Mudejar portal and a magnificently crafted wooden ceiling. Next to church is the palace of the Duchess of Medina Sidonia, a part of which dates back to the Moorish era. The palace has a beautiful café area and wonderful, exotic gardens, all of which are open to the public on a daily basis. On the other side of the apartment are old sherry bodegas that are open for visits and tastings. Immediately adjacent to the bodegas is the recently renovated castle that dates back to the 14th century. The castle has a splendid courtyard bar and restaurant.

Eating & drinking: Sanlucar is famous for its seafood, particularly langostinos, its fresh vegetables grown in the area surrounding the town, and its splendid manzanilla sherry. The best place to eat is in the high quality restaurants and bars by the waterfront (Bajo de Guia), which also have a great selection of wines. However there are many other tapas bars and restaurants within walking distance of the apartment that offer excellent value for money, including the main plazas that are no more than a 3 minute walk away. The town is famous for Manzanilla , a unique dry sherrry, but other sherries such as Cortado, Amontillado and Pedro Jimenez, are also produced in the numerous bodegas in the town. High quality brandies are also produced and more recent products include a local red and a dry white wine.

The Donana National Park: The Doñana is essentially the delta of the river Guadalquivir and is the most protected national park in Spain. It is famous for the variety of species of birds, permanent residents, winter visitors from north and central Europe or summer visitors from Africa, such as colourful flamingos. In the marshes and amid the cork oak forests, you've a good chance of seeing grey herons, lanner falcons, ring and turtle doves, partridges, oxpeckers, cattle egret, storks, vultures and possibly the rare Spanish Imperial Eagle. The park consists of three distinct eco-systems: the dunes, the marshes and the forests. There are still a few pairs of the very rare Spanish Lynx resident in the park.

Golf: There is an 18 hole, par 72 golf course that is no more than one mile from town.

A great family holiday for foodies

The apartment is a short walk to the town which is foodie heaven. Great daily covered market and dozens of stalls outside, seafood restaurants and Manzanilla sherry with everything which we loved. The apartment block is fabulous, with several internal quads, corridors and arches. The actual apartment is of average size but the 3rd bedroom has very little storage space. In the week we were there we only heard English spoken once and we had to rely on my son's GCSE Spanish as nobody in restaurants/shops spoke English, which we loved. The weather was in the early 90s without a single cloud every single (August) day, which meant nights were pretty hot - the only niggle. Also, loo paper, dishwasher and washing powder, soap, etc all included. Great for a weekend - flight to Jerez, perhaps? Very good. Must try tortilla de camarones - crunchy eggy pancake with tiny shrimps - heaven. Beach in Sanlucar part of estuary so you had to walk for about 5 mins before your knees got wet and it was very silty but beautifully warm.
