An enchanting house in the prettiest part of El Gastor.
This enchanting village house is tucked away in a quiet part of El Gastor, one of the prettiest of the 'white' villages, in the mountains close to Ronda and the Grazalema Park. The decoration of the house was inspired by Morocco: brightly coloured geometric doors in bedrooms all fitted cupboards, polished stucco in earthy tones, and a high standard of finish throughout the house: this has been a real labour of love for the owner, a cabinet maker. The beamed sitting room has a beautiful fire place and feels warm and welcoming. From here a horseshoe arch leads through to a kitchen where everything is brand new: cutlery, crockery, toaster, coffee maker etc. A staircase leads up to the two bedrooms and the bathroom. These are beamed and one has a balcony with a view out across the village rooftops to the surrounding hills. The bathroom is stuccoed and has brightly coloured tiles and retro style taps. If you are looking for a peaceful rental house in a friendly village, this is it

El Gastor is a pretty white village a half hour drive from Ronda in the Grazalema National Park. Sevilla, Jerez, Cordoba and Granada can all be visited as day trips from here. The area is very popular with walkers: an extensive network of footpaths crisscrosses the area. You will find a guide to the walks in the area in the house including a beautiful circuit out from the village. This part of southern Spain is well known by ornithologists because of the number of raptors, and the plant life is exceptionally diverse. The Park is a Unesco Biosphere reserve and is unquestionably one of the prettiest parts of Andalusia. The villagers are exceptionally friendly. Wander down to the bakers, dip into a bar for a cup of coffee: you'll be greeted with a smile everywhere you go and may well be invited into a village home. Forget the Costa: this is Andalusia at its most welcoming best and the owner of Casa Chaouen, Cristobal, will want to show you his village's most enchanting corners.

The Village
El Gastor is one of the prettiest of the 'white villages' and is a perfect place if you are looking to have a real taste of authentic, Andalusian village life. There are a number of bars and restaurants, small village shops including a bakery, fishmongers, butchers and fruit and veg shop. The village has a small museum dedicated to local arts and crafts, and to one of the village's more infamous former residents, Jose María Hinojosa, 'El Tempranillo', who was one of Andalucías's most famous bandoleros! There are great walks straight out from the village and nearby is 'El Dolmen del Gigante', a dolmen dating back to neolithic times. The village is well known for its 'mosto' wine and you should make sure to try a glass in one of the village 'bodegas'.
Walking
Cristobal, the house's Spanish owner, is a great friend of the author of an Englsih guide to walking in the area and he has masses of route notes, in English, of the best walks in the area, including a guest copy of 'Walking in Andalucía'. The circular walk that leads out from the village is amazing and takes you by a high contouring path round the side of the Lagarin mountain where you are bound to see vultures: the largest colony in Europe is just a few kilometers from here. Cristobal always finds time to drop round and see his guests loves to accompany his guests to the local bars for a coffee or a glass of the local 'mosto' wine.
Other Visits
You are spoiled for choice. Ronda is close, Grazalema and Zahara too, and you could easily head off to Sevilla or Cadiz for a day trip. It takes about an hour and a half to the nearest beaches of the Atlantic Coast but much closer is the beautiful Zahara reservoir where there are masses of great spots to swim. The village also has one of the area's most beautiful municipal pools. And find time to visit: Ronda La Vieja and the Roman theatre, the Pileta Cave with its Rock art paintings and, perhaps, take a day trip to Granada. You can take a train from Ronda which leaves at about 9am and then returns at about 6pm, perfect for taking in the Alhambra and perhaps the beautiful Generalife gardens.
