Calahonda is the largest property development you will find between Marbella and Fuengirola. In fact, this neighbourhood has grown so successfully that it could qualify as a town. It belongs to the municipality of Mijas, a lovely whitewashed sleepy town 10 minutes inland, famous for its local charm, pretty houses and donkey taxis.
Rural flavour and coastal lifestyle are two of Calahonda's most attractive features, because, although the area is developed, its founder was keen on green areas, large plots and limits on apartment buildings. Thus, the area has grown in a generally peaceful and rustic fashion, and recent laws prevent any new developments being over 5 stories high.
Famous for its clean Blue Flag beaches, the area offers a great selection. La Luna within 5 minutes walk, and Cabopino,Max Beach, La Cala, Funny Beach, Artola sand dunes (nudist areas) and world famous Nikki Beach are all within a 10 minute drive
Although a fairly low key resort it still has every amenity imaginable, three commercial centres which house most of the development's 50 restaurants, cafeterias and pubs as well as seven banks, several supermarkets and a wide variety of other businesses including: internet, hairdressers, medical facilities, travel agencies, car hire, newsagents, DVD hire and gift shops.
Los Cipress Commercial centre is only a 5 minute walk from the apartment, and further 20 minute walk will take you to the Avendida de Espana 'The Strip' which has a further selection of bars, shops and restaurants.
A 5 minute drive will take you to either El Zoco or Los Olivos Commercial centres, or if you are need of serious retail therapy La Canada indoor shopping centre is just a 10 minute drive away and hosts many favourite brands such as Mango, Zara, Zara home, M&S, many different Spanish boutiques, a whole level dedicated to restaurants and a cinema plus the fantastic hypermarket Al Campo.
Calahonda is a great base to get out and about and explore the region of Andalucia. Car hire is reasonable and plentiful (usually cheaper booked in advance from the airport) but can be booked locally in resort as well.
There is a local bus stop just a 5 minute walk from the apartment which will take you to Malaga, Marbella, Ronda, Fuengirola, Puerto Banus and further afield.
Great places to visit are Malaga City centre, beautiful architecture, churches, castle, rich in history and a must for any visitor is the world famous Picasso Museum, famous as Picassos birthplace, the museum offers over 230 original works of art, with different exhibitions throughout the year.
The areas answer to the lake district El Churro is also well worth a visit, peaceful place for boating, picnic and beautiful vistas.
