Photos and Description of the Montecorto holiday One of Andalusia's most beautiful homes with maid service, pool and internet

El Tejar is the highest house in the small village of Montecorto, a quarter of an hour from Ronda and has an amazing panoramic view of the Grazalema mountains. This exceptionally romantic house, which has been featured in several interior design magazines, is decorated in Andalusian/Moroccan style. Whitewashed beams and terracotta floors have been stylishly combined with warm colour washes. There are hundreds of books, CD players in all rooms, 24 hour free Internet with a new iMac and masses of beautiful paintings. Bedrooms have the same bright/ethnic feel: linen is top of the range, mattresses too, and all are big on space. A charming housekeeper, Francisca, cleans and tidies every day and can prepare meals if you wish. Sculpted into the hillside is a gorgeous pool surrounded by terraces shaded by olive, almond and citrus trees. A wholly exceptional holiday rental property - not just an ordinary villa - and perfect for a deeply relaxing holiday. Most guests return year after year.

The pretty village of Montecorto is at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a Unesco Biosphere reserve, which has some of the best hiking in Europe. (The owner of El Tejar has written a guide to the best walks). The fauna and flora of the Park are remarkable: more than a third of Spain's plant species grow here and ornithologists come from the world over because of the abundance of raptors and migrating birds. Just a quarter of an hour away is the extraordinary Roman theatre of Acinipo, hewn out of solid rock, and the Pileta cave - with some of Europe's best rock painting - is just a short drive away. Ronda, one of Spain's most spectacular towns, can be reached in fifteen minutes by car. The village of Montecorto is one of the 'pueblos blancos', a cluster of white hill villages which stretch from Arcos in the west to Ronda in the east. These villages are amongst the prettiest in Spain. And Sevilla, Jerez, Arcos, Cadiz and Granada can all be easily visited from Montecorto.

Paqui is a very kind and charming woman who lives in Montecorto. She is discrete, accommodating and we think helps to make a stay at El Tejar more relaxing for you. If you prefer Francisca NOT to come in this is of course NOT a problem. Further details for this holiday rental in Montecorto, Spain

Included daily help: Two and a half hours of daily cleaning help from a charming, and very discreet, Spanish maid is included in the weekly rental price. (Occasionally guests prefer for Francisca NOT to come up to El Tejar to clean and tidy. No problem....). What is so unique about El Tejar is that, if you should wish, Francisca can also prepare meals for you. She can either prepare a wide range of 'tapas' for you - these are made in her own home and then delivered to you for your lunch or dinner. Or she can also cook a full 3 course meal three course meal (minimum of 4 people) which will be served to you at your candlelit dining table. Francisca uses organically grown vegetables from her husband's vegetable plot, proper stock in her soups, and prepares delicious meat and fish dishes.

Why is this place so EXCEPTIONAL?: What is so special about El Tejar is that although you're at the edge of the village, when you sit on the terraces or by the pool no other house is visible. You have the best of both worlds: easy access to village shops and bars and an utterly secluded, deeply private location. We believe we have the most comprehensive guest information of any rental property in the area which includes information on the best local bars and restaurants, where to visit, and detailed route notes of the area's most beautiful walks. And the housekeeper Francisca - should you need assistance - is always keen to help you in every possible way. Her hard work means that you have more time to lap up the atmosphere at El Tejar and simply relax. Of course, if you prefer Francisca not to come in on weekdays, no probs. The travel writer Alastair Sawday recently included El Tejar amongst his favourite places to stay in Spain and we have had features written about the house in several UK newspapers.

A bit more about the village and the area: Montecorto is a quiet, friendly village. There are a number of bars and restaurants including one in the pine forest where you can have al fresco meals. There will always be somebody who is keen to talk to you! There is a bakers, four small grocery stores - two of them provide baskets so you can pick things off the shelf, a useful thing for non-Spanish speakers - as well as a bank and chemists. A lot of the fruit and vegetables for sale in the village come from the fertile terraces beneath the village. If you prefer to shop in supermarkets, there are several choices in Ronda, just 15 minutes from El Tejar. We provide arriving guests with a booklet listing our favourite bars and restaurants, interesting visits in the area, maps of the village, of Ronda and of the surrounding area, a history of the house and general information about the house. We have found that this little booklet really helps you to get the most out of this beautiful area where we have lived for nearly two decades.

Other Activities: Cultural Visits, Caving, Wine tasting, Ornithological excursions, Botany

STUNNING HOLIDAY VENUE

In Spring 2008, with a group of friends, we had the privilege of staying at El Tejar for a walking holiday based on the owner's route notes and maps. There was a huge variety of walks and all were wonderful in different ways. In particular was a route taking us staight from the house to a rocky crag from where we watched vultures and eagles riding the thermals - truly unforgettable. El Tejar itself could not have been a better place to stay - peaceful, comfortable, well located and included daily help from the lovely Francisca. We've booked again for 2009!

We have been back to El Tejar every year since we first found it. The house is lovely, full of character and very comfortable. The village of Montecorto is full of lovely people and has convenient shops - an opportunity to speak spanish! The location of El Tejar is fantastic, the views from the house are breath taking and the walking around the mountains with out equal. The owner, Guy, is a charming fount of knowledge about everything local and beyond. We would like El Tejar to be a best kept secret so that we can always book "our" week - but that would be selfish, so go ahead and stay, you won't be disappointed.

I stayed in El Tejar in Montecorto in March this year with a few friends and was delighted with the individuality of the place. Each en-suite bedroom is uniquely styled and the house is in a perfect location. Montecorto is a genuine Spanish village and the people are really friendly. We loved getting to know the little local bars and restaurants where we spent rather too much time!

A glimpse of the real Spain.....

Review Submitted: July 9, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
We have recently returned from a break at El Tejar in the delightful village of Montecorto, outside Ronda. If you want to catch a glimpse of real Spanish village life, this is the place for you!The way of life has changed little here, slow and friendly with just a few small, local shops where people take the time to say hello. We loved to stroll down to shop for ingredients for our meals.
El Tejar is a real gem - tranquil and relaxing, tucked away high above the village with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The rooms are charming - simply but stylishly furnished, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Paqui was such a help to us and prepared wonderful food - her tortillas are not to be missed!
A lovely place to relax!

Real Spain

Review Submitted: July 6, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
A fantastic location with breathtaking views accross to the mountains the first thing that greets you on opening your shutters of a morning. My favourite place to enjoy the view was from the balcony of the small living area adjacent to the first floor bedroom, preferably with a freshly brewed coffee and some fresh bread from the village - heaven. The house is perfect, terracotta tiled floors and open beamed ceilings with comfy furnishings. Nothing is pretentious or staged everything feels genuinely part of what one imagines was once a much loved home - a real home from home.
The external spaces are the real star of this property. Surrounded by mature plants, shrubs and fruit trees, they are wonderfully secluded. There are enough of them to ensure your own little corner in which to chill if the mood takes you. The pool area is lovely and I must admit to having done nothing but move between the pool and a very comfortable lounger for an entire day, except for the odd foray into the house to partake of Paqui's amazing Tortilla! The terraced areas are fantastic to sit out at night, nibbling on tapas and enjoying good wine with friends whilst the smell of honeysuckle fills the air. Gorgeous.
The village is authentic Spain, luckily, not held hostage to tourism, with trading hours to suit. It's possible to find all that you need food wise and the trip down to the bakers each morning is a great experience with the local housewives! The bar on the main square was hugely welcoming, be warned though, the local take on a measure of whiskey is rather large!! We would recommend Alora to eat in Zahara - delicious food and very welcoming. We also visited a couple of the local ventas, which were great value and served regional dishes - the fried Rosada (fish) was delicious.
The other very special thing about El Tejar is the walking, nearby is some of the most remote, dramatic and beautiful scenery, a walk is a must. Our favourite was the Walk of the Hidden Valley - as amazing as it sounds!
Paqui (the housekeeper) was very welcoming and helpful, her cooking is fantastic! The house was spotless and cleaned daily. The owner, Guy, was enthusuiastic and friendly we got the impression he really wanted us to experience the real Spain.
A brilliant holiday. I cannot recommend this place enough I fell in love with it and will definitely be going back.
