A truly delightful Spanish cottage in the heart of Gaucin, a traditional Andalucian mountain village. From the sun terrace there are stunning views especially south stretching down the Guadiaro river valley to the Mediterranean and beyond - on a clear day as far as the Rif Mountains of Morocco. Arranged over three floors the house also has a very pretty, secluded vine covered courtyard.

Gaucin is situated on a mountain ridge, at about 2000 feet, roughly halfway between Gibraltar and Ronda. The village is dominated by a Roman/Moorish castle and has narrow winding streets of gleaming white cottages with red tiled roofs. Gaucin has many tapas bars and restaurants, a public pool and is the centre for many of this region's fiestas. This is an ideal walking area through the hills and open countryside. The area is rich in vineyards, olive, cork and orange & lemon groves, which gives the countryside a fragrance and abundance of colour in the spring and autumn. Superb also for bird life and the wild flowers of springtime - indeed an area frequented by many artists. Easy driving distance to the magnificent cities of Granada, Cordoba and Seville as well as the nearer towns of Ronda, Marbella and Gibraltar. Airports: Malaga - 1 hour 30mins; Gibraltar 1 hour.

Gill, thank you for letting us stay at El Apeadero. We had a fabulous time there, a complete change to our normal trips. The tranquillity and stunning scenery of the village was wonderful, the food and drink excellent and all the people we met were very friendly and helpful. Total relaxation.

Escape the rat-race in a peaceful mountain retreat

The fact that we have returned to stay at El Apeadero repeatedly over the last 5 years, both in the height of summer and out-of-season speaks for itself. Both the village and the house have stolen our hearts and arriving each year feels like coming home.

The traditional village house is clean, comfortable and simply yet charmingly furnished. The kitchen is well equipped including useful items such a juicer (we recommend you stock up with oranges at El Rastro, the Sunday flea market in Sabinillas near the coast). The small courtyard has a built in BBQ and seating area which affords some welcome shade from the intense afternoon sun. If visiting out of season, the wood burning stove makes for a cosy living room and the electric blanket means that you can snuggle down in bed at night in comfort. The roof terrace affords one of the best views in town and on clear days you can see the Rock of Gibraltar rising against the Rif Mountains in Morocco 50 kilometres south. The terrace gets the sun all day long and well into the evening and the view is no less breathtaking at night when the castle is illuminated the sky fills with stars.

Gaucin is typical of the many pueblo blancos in the area. The village has several bars offering good, inexpensive tapas and a number of quality resturants. The village has a couple of small supermarkets and several smaller grocers offering fantastic, fresh, local produce. Situated on the main road from Ronda to Algeciras, the village is an ideal spot for exploring the region - Ronda, Tangier, Cadiz and Gibraltar are all close enough for a day trip whilst Seville, Cordoba and Granada are all 2 - 3 hours away.

All in all we would highly recommend this property and am sure that like us, after just one visit you will be hooked.

Lovely house in a peaceful setting

We had a lovely week here in the middle of October 08. Jill was extremely helpful from the start and booking was very easy. She sent through reams of information about the house, the village, local amenities etc. When we arrived at the house there was a great welcome pack of bread, fruit and wine, plus lots of useful maps and guide books about the surrounding area. We actually arrived on a Saturday night, so many shops were shut on the Sunday (and the Monday, as it was a fiesta day), but in the end we found what we needed in Gaucin. The local supermarket is well stocked and reasonably priced -- although the market in the centre was closed all week, presumably because it was off-season.

The house itself is charming -- clean and well equipped, with a very comfortable bed and lovely roof terrace that we were able to make full use of. The house certainly has everything you need, including towels and linen, crockery, maps, books etc. The small yard has a barbecue but the roof terrace was a real gem and it was such a treat to eat outside in October, with those incredible views.

I would advise parking your car at the top of the hill and walking round the village itself, as the streets are pretty narrow and everything you need is in easy walking distance. The castle is fantastic, well worth a visit. Gaucin itself is lovely and a great base for exploring the local area.

El Apeadero

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week holiday in Gaucin during June 2008. El Apeadero is a typical spanish house with lots of interesting features. The kitchen was well stocked with bits and pieces left by previous visitors and the welcome pack was very handy. Although the house is on a well used road through the village it was never noisy. The barbeque in the little courtyard was well used as was the fantastic roof terrace. The perfect place to watch the sun go down with a nice glass of Spanish wine to hand.

There was lots of information on places to visit and a bookshelf with a good selection of holiday reading.

There are several shops in the village which stock most of what you need although we did call in the larger supermarkets when we were out and about.

We visited Ronda, Sevilla, Cadiz and lots of villages/coastal towns in between. Well worth the effort to do some sightseeing, there are some lovely places to visit.

We had a great time at El Apeadero Gaucin. There was a welcome pack with fruit and wine and a well stocked kitchen, including some delicious coffee. The house is very spacious with a sun drenched roof balcony with splendid views over the village and towards the sea. There is plenty of literature about the area with hints and tips, and also lots of other books to read. The house is located right in the middle of the town and is perfectly situated for visits to the local bars and restaurants. Booking was easy and Jill kept in touch with us to ensure everything went smoothly.
