LA ESPERANZA is a stylishly converted olive mill in the beautiful village of GAUCIN. The house is situated in a very quiet street with no through traffic but within minutes of the centre of the village with its many restaurants, bars and shops. The house has two terraces with incredible views south to the Mediterranean, the Rock of Gibraltar and North Africa and also the picturesque roof tops and castle of the village. Central to the house is the courtyard, which has a recently built pool 4.5m x 3m and a large area for sunbathing and dining. LA ESPERANZA is extremely comfortable and spacious and suitable for all seasons as it has both air-conditioning, essential in the summer, and central heating, plus a cosy log fire for chilly autumn and winter weather.

GAUCIN is one of the famous Spanish 'pueblo blancos', the white villages of Andalucia. Set high on a mountain, GAUCIN commands spectacular views to the Mediterranean, the Rock of Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of North Africa. The village is overlooked by a Moorish castle, and the narrow winding streets with their white painted houses and pretty wrought iron balconies with masses of flowers, are quintessentially Spanish. The area is well known not only for it's beauty but also for it's bird life which includes eagles, buzzards, bee-eaters and many other rare species. The terrain is perfect for those who enjoy walking, riding or cycling. The historic town of Ronda is 40 minutes away and the cities of Seville, Granada and Cordoba are all within easy reach. For those who prefer sun and sand, the coast is just 30 minutes from Gaucin.

The house is situated in the 'Pueblo Blanco' of Gaucin in the beautiful countryside of Andalucia. The converted olive mill is situated in a small quiet street with no through traffic. Less than a five minute walk to the centre of the village where there are excellent shops, tapas bars, restaurants, tennis courts and a public swimming pool. The secluded courtyard and garden, features the original mill stone set into the ground and is perfect for lunching and dining. there is a 4.5mtr x 2.5mtr plunge pool with a jet stream for swimming. The 2 upper terraces affords views across the village to the medieval castle and is ideal for sunbathing, lunch, and that pre-dinner cocktail.

All bedrooms are air conditioned and have on-suite bath/shower rooms.

A secluded gem

We found this holiday home by way of a random search on the internet for a house or villa in Andalucia and specifically in the Ronda region. Going in August made air conditioning a must and we needed something to accomodate up to 8 people from late teens upwards. I confess the house was difficult to find - despite the detailed directions - and the arrival during the darkness of the evening did not help but this was forgotten as soon as we walked through the door into the courtyard. The house was all we had hoped for and more. The description really didn't do the place justice. The house had every amenity we could want and was clean and very well presented. The owners had been very helpful with information before we went and their local representation was excellent for any problems that could arise.

Everything in Gaucin is within walking distance and there are excellent trails outside the village for those who wish to treck further afield. It is quite conceivable that anybody looking for a quiet time to read, relax and potter around the immediate environs could stay here without a car so long as they can get transport (a taxi?) to and from the airport. The village streets are so narrow and parking so restricted it might be a blessing. That said, we enjoyed our trips to Ronda, Estapona and Gibraltar and the village shops are somewhat restricted in their range of goods. A supermarket shop in Ronda or Estapona is really quite essential.

There are excellent restaurants in the village covering all price ranges. The Hotel Casablanca is almost adjacent and worth at least one meal there if the pocket can stretch that far but there are four or five other mid range restaurants as well as some cheaper options. We had nothing other than excellent meals throughout our stay and whether eating out or staying at the house for our evening meal in the courtyard, we usually finished up out there until the early hours or up on the roof terrace gazing at the stars with little or no light pollution making this truly spectacular.

If you are looking for masses of acivities, this is not for you. If you want nightlife - other than eating out over a wide variety of tastes and prices - again, this is not for you. However, if you are looking for a quiet location in a well appointed house with all the domestic facilities you could ever want, then you could not find anything better.

We liked it so much we are there again this year - roll on August!

La Esperanza

Thanks to Geoffrey for letting us stay in his house. It is a lovely house in a great location in the charming village of Gaucin. The house is very well equipped and is clean, bright and well decorated, has sufficient furniture and bedding etc for all your needs. The terraces are a wonderful way to catch the sun, enjoy a pre-dinner drink and the views are spectacular right down to the coats, and Gibraltar.

The house is on the edge of the village and is reached by a road that is narrow even by Gaucin standards so a small/medium car is advised although the neighbouring people do bring a large landrover down - rather them than me. There is parking nearby so this should not put anyone off coming here. The garage is ideal to store your car and keep it cool during the hot months.

The local people who manage the house speak English and are very friendly and will offer any assistance if required.

The internet connection is fast and free and great for teenage kids.

We enjoyed our stay and will definitely go there again.

The nearby houses are mostly occupied by locals and so visitors should be prepared for normal comings and goings of people going about their daily lives going to work and so on and so it isn't 100% quiet. Having said that it's quite amusing to meet the local builder and his donkey!

There's a shop opened opposite the Casablanca that is great and the restaurant at the Casablanca has some amazing cuisine. Th erest of the village is full of quality restaurants and the Tapas Bar by the fountain remains a firm favourite.

We will definitely be back - so don't book when I want it!

Luxury white village retreat

I have been to Gaucin a few times and this time went as part of a family get together, where we rented four houses. All of them were lovely, but by common consent La Esperanza, was head and shoulders above the rest. It is beautifully fitted out, with suite-like bedrooms and has lots of living areas so that four couples can each have have their own space to read or chill out. The view from the roof terraces are breathtaking and the pool has solar heating which meant that the braver souls could take a dip on sunny days even in mid April. On the chillier evenings we had the central heating to keep us warm plus the amply supplied log fire in the main lounge.
Gaucin is a lovely white village, within easy reach of the coast and well placed for the cork forests and country parks inland. I strongly recommend a short drive through el colmenar into the cork forests, where you can stroll or picnic in truly amazing scenery, without seeing another soul apart from the odd eagle or buzzard. The village itself has a good range of restaurants and tapas bars - far more than you would expect for such a small place. The restaurant El Fructuosa seems to be a converted mill, with very sophisticated cuisine and lovely views down to the coast. Gaucin even has its own hippy style organic food and alternative remedy shop.
The youngsters were more adventurous and drove to nearby Algeciras to catch the ferry to Morocco, where they spent the day exploring Tangier and hagglling in the casbah.
This was a truly hassle free and relaxing holiday and I am already spreading the word amongst my friends about La Esperanza.

A charming little hideaway

Our week at La Esperanza was good. The house is extremely charming. Everything worked. It was in March so we used the fireplace a lot but of course the pool was not used. One should be prepared for the fact that although there are many bedrooms they are all small. We had 5 people and found the house a little tight. for all of us. We were using Gaucin as a central point to travel to other places in Andalucia. the problem was that Gaucin is just not easy to navigate. The streets are very narrow and hard to drive through. Also, the native population, not the expats, but the Spanish local people are not helpful or that friendly. We speak Spanish. We live in Mexico. We found the Spanish culture in general to be cold when compaired to the warmth and humility of Mexico. Nearby Ronda is better and Seville was our favorite. But so much of Southern Spain is not historical or charming.
