Photos and Description of this Montecorto holiday house A secluded and romantic hideaway for 2 with infinity pool.

Dar Hajra is hidden away in a forest above the undiscovered ‘white village’ of Montecorto, close to Ronda. From the villa’s rocky perch you are treated to a stunning views of the Grazalema mountains. A path flanked by rosemary, lavender and honeysuckle climbs up to the house: it looks traditional enough from the outside but within, a big surprise awaits. The mountain has been wrapped into the fabric of the building and rock adds a stunning decorative element: Dar Hajra means ‘House of the Rocks’. A pyramidal atrium is the visual axis around which the open-plan lounge/diner turns. Three huge windows lead to the terrace and infinity edge plunge pool whose waters seem to merge with the sky. The sitting room, kitchen/diner and study are one huge open space, there's a large master bedroom, extraordinary bathroom and masses of books, CDs and paintings. The villa has featured in several design mag features and if you're looking for a romantic and secluded self-catering villa, this is it.

The pretty village of Montecorto is at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a Unesco Biosphere reserve, which has some of the best hiking in Europe. (The owner of El Tejar has written a guide to the best walks). The fauna and flora of the Park are remarkable: more than a third of Spain's plant species grow here and ornithologists come from the world over because of the abundance of raptors and migrating birds. Just a quarter of an hour away is the extraordinary Roman theatre of Acinipo, hewn out of solid rock, and the Pileta cave - with some of Europe's best rock painting - is just a short drive away. Ronda, one of Spain's most spectacular towns, can be reached in fifteen minutes by car. The village of Montecorto is one of the 'pueblos blancos', a cluster of white hill villages which stretch from Arcos in the west to Ronda in the east. These villages are amongst the prettiest in Spain. And Sevilla, Jerez, Arcos, Cadiz and Granada can all be easily visited from Montecorto.

There is an huge window, again designed so that you can lie in the bath tub - there is room for two! - and look at the distant peaks of the Grazalema Park. There is a long wooden dressing table/sink with masses of space for all your sopas, creams etc. And even in the bathroom there are framed prints, some from India, others from Spain. And lots of potted plants. The light scree floor, the light, the rock and the views help make this - we bet - one of the most memorable bathrooms you'll ever have washed in.

Bedrooms:
  • 2 bedrooms, sleeps maximum of 4 people
  • Bedroom 1 - 1 Large Double Bed
    Bedroom 2 - 1 Double Bed
  • The main bedroom is reached via a staircase that winds down through the rocks. It has a really comfortable bed with excellent mattress as well as a thinner top mattress (Scandinavian style). If you've never slept on a bed like this you'll be amazed. Linen is top quality and we supply light Indian quilts as well as blankets. The bedroom has a fabulous view out to the mountains: the house was designed with a slightly lower-than-average window so that you can laze in bed and lap up the view. There is a huge walk-in wardrobe with masses of shelf and hanging space. The upstairs bedroom is reached by a second winding staircase which leads up through rocks (the one you see in the photo taken across the dining table). This bedroom is smaller yet is also really romantic and has been decorated in the greens and blues that are typical of Moroccan Riad design. It has a door leading out to a top roof terrace. The two single beds can be zipped together to make a king size double.

Dar Hajra - one of the best

oscar&dolly Hemel Hempstead
Review Submitted: January 10, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
Dar Hajra is approached via a fairly circuitous route through the pine forest, but when you arrive, what a reward!
You really do feel you are on top of the world in this very special property, which even exceeded the tempting description. The unique design creates an impression that the house has grown organically from the rock face, which is an integral part of most rooms - including the incredible bathroom! The clever use of light and space is fully complemented by the comfortable and carefully chosen furnishings- all incredibly clean and well kept. We particularly loved the ethnic influences.
The terrace was to die for! The designer infinity pool, the second comfortable seating and dining area, and the most spectacular views made it very difficult to tear ourselves away, particularly as we were working our way through the amazing music selection. Watching the sunset with a glass of Rioja was very special, not to mention romantic!
We loved the village. The people were so friendly, and we found the shops had just about everything we needed. We even found oysters in the fish shop! (weekends only). We enjoyed our sessions in the bars and the simple but good food at Bar Piscina. We really did feel we were part of the real Spain - far from the crowds and commercialism of “the costa”.
We were spoilt for choice regarding trips out, but particularly enjoyed visits to the Roman theatre and the Caves of Pileta and, of course, Ronda with so much to see, from Arab Baths to Moorish palaces and views from the incredible gorge.
This was one of our best holidays and we can’t wait to return in cooler months to explore the very beautiful Grazalema Natural Parc. We were inspired by the owner’s book “Walking in Andalucia” and intend to make good use of it on our next visit!
We will certainly recommend Dar Hajra to friends, whether for chilling out in summer, or walking in cooler months through the most magnificent scenery. It would also be a perfect place for a honeymoon!

An amazing place for a romantic getaway

Review Submitted: January 4, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2008
My boyfriend and I have now stayed at Dar Hajra four times and will be returning later this spring. I think this is the most beautiful house that I've ever seen - it has been built round huge rocks which have been beautifully integrated into the design of the house - it reminded me of a house that we saw in the States designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The bathroom is amazing and the bedroom really romantic - kind of Moroccan in style with rugs, wallhangings and rich colours. There's an amazing collection or CDs and DVDs, internet and a really cool infinity edge pool but what we love most of all is just chilling out on the terrace looking out to the Ronda Mountains.
We feel like we're on a honeymoon every time that we stay and it is perfectly secluded.
If you stay we recommend that you visit the Tragabuches restaurant in Ronda which has a Michelin star - we had one of our best ever meals there.
And also be sure to buy fresh organic fruit and veggies from Pepe who has a farm within walking distance of the house.
