Local Activities:
The Sierra de Las Nieves national park (declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1995) offers a wide variety of walks with spring and autumn being the best times of year. There are several walks starting from the village which range from gentle walks through orange groves and forests of Andalusian Pine, the ‘Pinsapo’, to more strenuous mountain walks which afford spectacular views. A wide variety of plants, animals and birds can be seen, including cabra montes (mountain goats), fallow deer (gamo), wild cats, wild boar. The varied terrain provides a suitable habitat for a wide variety of birds which include raptors (golden eagles, Bonelli’s eagle, griffon vultures), hoopoes, wheatears, oriol, warblers, shrikes, rock thrushes, choughs, to name but a few.
An ideal way to explore the surrounding countryside is on horseback. There are local stables with well trained horses who cater for all abilities. Riding can be arranged through a local English speaking contact.
Caving and Climbing:
The Mountains surrounding Yunquera offer numerous opportunities for climbing often on deserted rock faces. Also the climbers mecca of El Chorro lies around 45 minutes away and offers traditional as well as bolted routes. The Sierra de las Nieves lies in a large area of karst containing numerous caves and potholes including Sima GESM with a depth of 1101m. The Hundidero–Gato system is an hours drive away which provides a sporting 4½km through trip for experienced cavers.
An experience not to be missed is the showcave “Cueva de la Pileta” near Benaojan which contains numerous paleolithic cave paintings. If any cavers would like more information on the caves of the area please contact us.
5 minutes walk from the house there is a public outdoor swimming pool, in beautiful landscaped grounds with refreshment kiosk and BBQ areas. There are also tennis courts, basketball court, football pitches and a climbing wall. Local produce is very cheap in the village. Particular good value is in-season fruit and vegetables, fresh bread and local speciality cakes, fish and pork. Beer in local bars will cost you 70 cents and fresh ground coffee 1 Euro, much cheaper than on the coast! I find the local Spanish people to be very friendly and helpful. They love you to try out your Spanish and a few basic words will get you far.
