Comares only 5 minutes away, is one of Andalucia's most picturesque and un spoilt white hill top villages, it is perched on one of the highest peaks in the Sierra de Tejeda national park and is known as the 'Balcon de Axarquia'. The village was of strategic importance during Moorish times and was one of the bases of Omar ben Hafsun. At the highest point of the village there are ruins of a Moorish castle. The village remains unspoilt and is a fascinating place to explore, with its spectacular views, and is ideal to pop to for an excellent lazy lunch.
Velez Malaga a 20 minute drive, is a typical Spanish Town with an old quarter dating back to Moorish occupation. It has an old castle La Fortaleza, of which a restored tower remains, set in pretty gardens. There are also two interesting old churches. The town has an excellent municipal market every day except Sunday, selling local produce, fish meat, vegetables and fruit. There is also a wide range of modern shops and supermarkets.
