Alhaurin el Grande is situated 240 metres above sea level in the Guadalhorce Valley, and is only a short distance from Mijas and Fuengirola. The town gives a real lesson in Spanish culture, with delicious tapas, and festivals of flamenco and jazz. Fiestas are also celebrated with passion, especially the Dia de la Virgen de Gracia on August the 15th. Coin has a huge wealth of archaeological finds, dating the settlement to the first century BC. Alora is a stunning whitewashed village in the rocky outcrops of the Sierra de Mijas, in the shadow of the ruins of the magnificent Alora’s Castle. The town comes alive on Mondays with the market. For the best local craftwork, Carratraca boast some fabulous traditional produce.
The town of Cartama remains the regions most historically important area with many archaeological sites from Roman times and long before.
