Alhaurin el Grande is situated 240 metres above sea level in the Guadalhorce Valley, and is only a short distance from Mijas and Fuengirola. The town has a very spacious feel, despite the narrow winding streets, as there are many picturesque open squares. The town gives a real lesson in Spanish culture, with delicious tapas, and festivals of flamenco and jazz. Fiestas are also celebrated with passion, especially the Dia de la Virgen de Gracia on August the 15th. Coin has a huge wealth of archaeological finds, dating the settlement to the first century BC. The town of Cartama remains the regions most historically important area with many archaeological sites from Roman times and long before.
