Antequera, ‘the crossroads of Andalucia’, is a charming whitewashed Andalucian town whose history can be tracked as you pass through the wonderful array of monuments which surround the area. Those with even a passing interest in the history and culture of Andalucia will be thrilled with the number of historic attractions which surround the village. During your stay in Antequera accommodation you can easily investigate Bronze Age burial mounds, ancient dolmens, Gothic churches, renaissance monuments, Roman baths and the large Moorish castle which stands proudly above the town. The dolmens at Cueva de la Malaga are the largest example of an ancient mass tomb in the whole of Andalucia.

At certain times of the year, this relatively peaceful town erupts into life. The annual fair takes place during the third week of August, and is a particularly special time to be staying in Antequera accommodation. The agricultural fair in June and the Semana Santa processions during Easter are great fun too.

The village of Villanueva de la Concepcion lies at the foot of the incredible El Torcal. The village celebrates its festivals with real passion, and if you can get Antequera accommodation during the February Carnival, the Summer Feria in mid August or the Anniversary of Villanueva’s conception on November the 3rd, it is well worth the trip.

Treasure hunters will be enchanted by the rumours of Roman treasure buried near the charming little village of Villanueva del Rosario! However, the village is a treasure in itself, providing a great rural retreat, with two fascinating Copper Age archaeological sites to see.
