Fornalutx enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the most picturesque villages in Spain and has won several national awards for the loving way in which buildings, streets and amenities are cared for and maintained. Fornalutx offers a true oasis of tranquillity, scented by citrus trees and almond blossoms. As its ancient houses built in mellow, terracotta stone stand sentinel over narrow cobbled mule paths - so the imposing peaks of the Tramuntanas fall steeply into the sea, creating coves so sheltered as to be almost invisible. These in turn give way to lush green valleys and - in the winter - rushing torrentes. Many of these areas can be explored from the village by taking the local twisting mountain roads, revealing a different panoramic vista at each turn..
Close to Fornalutx is the Baranque - one of the wonders of the world. Starting from the hamlet Biniaraix, these stone steps were cut through the mountains perhaps 2,500 years ago by the Carthaginians.
