Sad end

Date of Stay: April 2009
We stayed for 2 weeks over Easter with our 6 children and it was a nice house. The town was OK but much more like Milton Keynes on sea than I had expected. All was fine until we got home and were charged £60 for a single duvet that was reported missing by the maintenance company. We left the duvet in the house and did not remove it but the owner removed the money from the deposit without even the courtesy of emailing first. When we pointed out what a bizarre suggestion it was that having spent roughly £5000 on the holiday including flights ,the house and a car wasn't it ludicrous to suggest that we had taken a grotty used duvet home on our Jet2 flight we were given £30 back. The owner promised to look into it but have heard nothing. In the scheme of things all so trivial but left a really bad taste and completely spoilt that holiday groove. Never had anything at all happen like this and hope never again. Real shame
Owner's Response: I try very hard to provide a lovely villa so that all guests enjoy their stay – all the furniture, bed linen towels etc are of the highest quality. I have employed the same company for several years to look after the house, clean and check before each visit that everything is there and looking great. Immediately after these guests had left we discovered that a kitchen light was off the wall and broken, 6 glasses, a salad bowl and a single duvet were missing. A duvet is not something that can be lost in the house by the cleaners as each bed is changed and I asked the cleaners to check twice. Within a few days I wrote to the guests informing them of the missing items and refunded the difference from the deposit. After discussion with the guests they acknowledged the other items but disputed the duvet which I confirmed was still missing. As a gesture of goodwill I suggested we split the cost even though I have had to pay the full amount and more to replace these items. I believe in treating everyone fairly and honestly - as I would wished to be treated myself.
El Toro is a lovely small village not a large built up town. There is only 1 hotel and that is a 5 star hotel. There is a main street and a couple of pretty squares with children’s play areas in the centre and bars, restaurants and shops around the outside. The beach is sandy and the sea is calm and shallow. A photograph on my website shows that the attractive beach is surrounded by cliffs and plants rather than buildings. The marina has a selection of bars and restaurants and for 2010 will be expanded with more upmarket shops, bars and restaurants – many of the exclusive Puerto Portals traders will be opening retail or food/drink units here.
