La Manga:
Means sleeve in Spanish and is an appropriate name for this narrow strip of land with beautiful white sand beaches. The strip is 18 kms long, and nestles between two seas; the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor (the Little Sea). The Mar Menor is an immense lake of warm, tranquil salt water, rich in salts and iodine and noted for its therapeutic properties. The waters are a magnificent natural swimming pool with temperatures maintained by a sun that shines for an average of 320 days each year. The maximum depth of 6.5 metres makes it an ideal location to enjoy the many water sports available.
Sports and Activities:
Thanks to the geographic conditions and the climate, La Manga del Mar Menor is probably the best place in the world for the practice of nautical sports. The two distinct seas, soft breezes, sunny days and significant sporting infrastructures makes La Manga a sailors paradise. Throughout the length of La Manga there are ten centres (Escuelas de Vela) which means that no one need travel far to practice the water sport of their choosing: sailing of catamarans, canoeing, water skiing, windsurfing, jet skiing and most other nautical sports including deep-sea diving. Apart from water sports, La Manga offers a great variety of other activities to suit all tastes such as hang-gliding, horse riding, walking and bird watching at the nearby nature reserves. The world famous La Manga Club is 20 minutes drive away with many quality golf courses close by. There are tennis clubs with courts open to the public all year round, plus paddle tennis and squash.
In addition there is a roller-skating rink and full size go-kart track. The road which runs through La Manga has been built to offer the cyclist the safety of a cycle lane and there’s an absences of hills throughout the strip. Blue flag beaches and boat trips also make this a favourite place for all the family. Relax and enjoy – in La Manga you can rest, practice sport and also get to know the local history, or participate in the Traditional Fiestas of the area. Visit archaeological remains such as the Roman Theatre in Cartagena or tour through the Sierra Minera. Cuisine – A world of flavours of La Manga, and the typically Mediterranean style of cooking is available in the restaurants. This includes paellas, fresh fish, freshly grilled meats and succulent salads.
