The Mar Menor:
Few regions are lucky enough to have a salt-water lagoon beside the Mediterranean Sea. Along its 73 kilometres coastline perimeter there are numerous beaches with crystal clear, shallow water (with a maximum depth of 7 metres) making it very safe for children. The Mar Menor lagoon covers an area of 170 km2, making it the biggest salt-water lake in Europe. In the coolest months the temperature of the water is about 12°C while in August it reaches 30°C. The Mar Menor is listed by the World Health Organisation as one of the healthiest places on earth. Many people come to the northern end of the Mar Menor to cover themselves in the black mud from the salinas, which is supposed to be full of all sorts of nutrients. With the many cafes & bars dotted along the beach it's a great way to spend the day & soak up the sun.
