Photos and Description of this Juviles holiday house 3 Bedrooms to sleep 5 (2 double & 1 single), 2 bathrooms.

La Golondrina was built in traditional style in 2006, on the site of an old ruined home, parts of which have been retained in the new building. There are 3 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms, & on the top floor, a big open plan area with a well-equipped kitchen, breakfast bar, dining & living areas, a wood burning fire & French doors leading onto the roof terrace. There is a cool, sheltered walled garden. The views across the village & the valley beyond are quite magnificent. All furniture & appliances are of high quality and new (in early 2007). Juviles is a quiet & very pretty little village of about two hundred souls, in the highest part of the Alpujarra. It has three bars (all of which serve great (free) tapas & (inexpensive) full meals), and a couple of shops. The village has a beautiful new public swimming pool (open in summer). We're surrounded by fantastic walking country, & the flora & fauna - especially the bird life - is exceptional. Recommended in The Guardian, January 2007

Juviles is about 1,200m above sea level, in the strictly protected Sierra Nevada National Park. People here still keep mules to help on their smallholdings of olive, almond and chestnut trees. The region is one of the very best in Europe for walking, and one of the most important in terms of diversity of plant and animal species. It's also a great place for horse-riding and mountain-biking, both of which can be arranged locally, and close to the ski-slopes for the winter season. There are excellent beaches about forty minutes away, while the sophisticated city of Granada - with the Alhambra, of course - is about an hour and 15 minutes away by car. Local culinary delicacies include famous air-cured ham, ewe's cheese and wild mushrooms. The friendly bars preserve the tradition of offering free tapas when you buy a beer or a glass of wine.

Notes: We do not discourage children or families, but parents should be aware that there is a roof terrace outside the living area on the top floor. This is surrounded by a wall approximately four feet high, so any child (or adult) would have to make a concerted effort to climb over it to be in any danger. We have said that the house is 'unsuitable for the elderly and infirm' because there are lots of steps and the house is on a steep street - however it depends on your level of fitness and an older person in good general health should have no problems. We have recently (May 07) landscaped the walled garden to provide a sheltered, private place to sit outside. This will be a cool, shady alternative to the roof terrace, which can be very hot in the middle of the day in summer.

Further details for this holiday house rental in Juviles, Spain

La Golondrina: We named our house 'the swallow' after one that nested - and successfully raised a brood of five babies - in our pantry while the builders were at work. It's like that around here - you're very close to nature. Our street is too narrow for most vehicles, but horses, mules and small flocks of goats frequently pass by our house on the way to pasture above the village. Compared to many village houses in the Alpujarra - which can be cramped and dark - ours is large, with big, light-filled rooms. The living and dining areas open directly onto an enclosed roof-terrace with spectacular views, creating a huge indoors-outdoors space. For more information and pictures, see our website, please ask for details.

Juviles: The village is very quiet most of the time, with fewer than 200 permanent residents, although it gets pretty lively during the main fiesta in August, and at Easter time when lots of younger local people who now live in the cities come home for a visit. As it's within the Parque Natural, it's strictly protected, so it looks very traditional and even new buildings (like ours) are built with local materials and techniques. The bars are what you might call rustic - cheap, friendly and a bit eccentric, they do great free tapas and offer very good value three course menus at lunch time. There's a little supermarket and a pharmacy. There's also a lovely new open-air swimming pool, but it's only open during the summer months.

La Alpujarra: 'The Alpujarra' (sometimes spelled in the plural with an 's') refers to the Southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the Contraviesa hills to the south and the fertile Guadalfeo valley in between. Thanks to the meltwater from the winter snows in the high mountains above, and the ingenious system of irrigation channels first built by the Moors, its a green and pleasant land, and amazingly rich in flora and fauna. Thirty or so villages are dotted through the hills, and most, like Juviles, are pretty collections of whitewashed, flat-rooved traditional houses. Amongst the communities you'll find some surprisingly sophisticated restaurants, and businesses offering everything from yoga classes to guided walking. Granada and the Alhambra is an easy day trip, and the Costa Tropical, which you can reach in under an hour, has great beaches which are popular with Spaniards rather than foreigners, and where you can indulge in golf, sailing, scuba-diving and other activities.

Other Activities: bird watching

Lovely house with fantastic views

Nickabu Abhu Dhabi, UAE
Review Submitted: December 5, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
This is a really nice house that is excellently equipped. The standard of the kitchen fittings is really good. The main room upstairs (living room, dinning area and kitchen) has wonderful views from the roof terrace. The house is in a good location in the village to get the best views. Juviles is a very good village to stay in. It is small, quiet and peaceful, but there are a few bars and a shop. It is close to the much larger village of Berchules which has a good collection of shops and eating places. Unlike many of the villages Juviles has many parking places on the main street, just a short distance from the house. This house is very warmly recommended!
Owner's Response: Juviles is certainly peaceful, but there are two shops, three bars (each of which does tapas and meals), and a van delivers bread each morning. The village has a beautiful open air pool, which is open in the summer months.

La Golondrina

Review Submitted: June 3, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
This property provides excellent value for money. The view from the roof terrace was every bit as good as described. It was spotlessly clean and well cared for, with nice new facilities. There was hot water whenever needed and very efficient showers. We were very well supported before our visit - the owner providing careful instructions for picking up keys and directions from the airport. The house has a good selection of local guides and maps and the housebook of guidance and instructions is excellent. Telephone numbers for help were available though we did not need them. This would be a very good base for a holiday at any time of year.

La Golondrina May 2009

Walker63 Nottingham
Review Submitted: May 18, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Property was fitted out to a very high standard and well equipped with a patio giving splendid views. A very quiet village with flocks of sheep and goats herded down the main street. Some of the best walking in Las Alpujarras with an excellent supply of walking guides both in Spanish and English and plenty of books for a rainy, or lazy, day. Good restaurants both in Berchules and Trevelez about 20mins away. Best holiday we have had in Spain! Owner very helpful prior to arrival and good English-speaking assistance available when needed while in Juviles.

Juviles spring 2009

Simme Copenhagen, Denmark
Review Submitted: April 28, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
My wife and I and our 4 months old son had a wonderful time in La Golondrina. The house has everything you need to get bye and more. The view is excellent and the locals friendly. The village is located about an hours drive from the main road. This means that destinations outside of the alpujarra is quite a long drive especially with a small child.

Owner's Response: To avoid confusion - the village is in the middle of the high Alpujarra on a metalled "main" road, but it's nearly an hour to the motorway. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in this and neighbouring villages, within a few minutes drive.

The best village in the Alpujarra

Johnjem Kinross, Scotland

"We were very pleased with the house - we felt that in Juviles we seemed to be in the best village in the Alpujarras, and in La Golondrina we were in the best house in the village. The accommodation was excellent and the local contacts extremely helpful."
