Photos and Description of this Juviles holiday villa
3 Bedroom, 3 bathroom, sleeps up to 8

The Mill is a truly unique property, a wonderful rural retreat set in its own private 'barranco' (valley), surrounded by over a hectare of mature woodland and a constantly flowing river cascading down through the finca forming numerous natural pools which are perfect for cooling down in the heat of summer. The Mill house itself offers spacious accommodation over 3 levels and has been carefully restored over several years, retaining much of its rustic charm - the old mill workings and grinding stones are still there - while attention to detail is evident everywhere, with slate stone floors throughout and even LED lights in the bathroom floors and walls! Each of the 3 ensuite bedrooms has its own external entrance - one down beside the river, and the other two leading from a 'tinao' - a feature of Alpujarran/Berber architecture which connects separate rooms. But the star if the show is water - the river, 3 fountains keeping the air cool, and of course, the swimming pool and hot tub.

Nestled between the villages of Juviles and Berchules in the Barranco de Cimbua, The Mill is only a 2 minute drive to both. The wider region of The Alpujarra is well-established on the tourist trail, made famous by such writers as Gerald Brenan as early as the 1920s, and more recently by Chris Stewart with his best-selling 'Driving Over Lemons'. Yet, much of the landscape and rural villages remain largely unspoiled, and there are limitless opportunities to lose yourself on the seemingly infinite trails and paths that wind their way through countryside which is breathtakingly beautiful at any time of year.

Upstairs in the living area, there is a large wood-burning stove in addition to oil-filled radiators. The sofa bed in the living room is a full-size single bed if required. The formal swimming pool is circular with a diameter of 6m and a depth of 1.3m. It is situated on one of 3 large flat terraces towards the top of the property and benefits from superb open views to the south and all-day sunshine. As indicated above, the finca tumbles down the valley over several levels and terraces, following the river. There is a short walk (about 150m) downhill from the car park to the house, which may be unsuitable for the elderly. We will always be on hand to meet guests and help with luggage. The Mill is a great place for children to explore and have fun (very Enid Blyton in fact!), but, while all steep drops and river walls are barriered, it may be unsuitable for very young children.

Further details for this holiday villa rental in Juviles, Spain

Additional facilities and information: We think The Mill will be a favourite for families and groups of friends who want to chill out in absolute privacy and wonderfully calming, tranquil surroundings. In fact, the geography and nature of the property lend themselves to finding quiet spots where even individual members of a group can disappear to if they wish! However, there are loads of activities close at hand for guests at The Mill. Take a walk across the little suspension bridge and follow the river to where it joins the famous GR7 walking route. An easy half-hour walk takes you to the top of El Fuerte de Juviles with the remains of a 10th Century Moorish citadel ('Fort') at the top, and a very colourful history! Not surprisingly, the views are terrific and there are plenty of flat grassy areas if you decide to take a picnic. In the house, there is a good library of books and magazines to wile away the hours, and also a selection of board games.

Further afield: The Mill is a 15 minute drive (or 40 minutes by bike) from Trevelez - the highest village in Spain, famous for its cured ham and starting point for walks up Mulhacen (the highest mountain in mainland Spain at over 3400m) taking in the glorious 'Seven Lakes' on the way up. Granada, with The Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens is 90 minutes by car.

Local services: We offer guests a food shopping service so that the fridge is well stocked before you arrive. There's no charge for doing this - just tell us what you'd like and we'll give you the receipt when you arrive. For additional provisions, the village of Juviles is a 2 minute drive from the Mill, with a well-stocked grocers, bank, pharmacy and 3 bars. There are 2 excellent restaurants in Berchules (5 minutes drive), and the local market town of Cadiar is 15 minutes away. Additionally, there are copies of The Rough Guide to Andalucia and Jeremy Rabjohn's excellent 'Holiday Walks in The Alpujarra', along with detailed walking maps of the region in the house which you can take with you whenever you're heading out and about. And we ourselves are always available to help with advice and suggestions for making the most of your stay at The Mill.

Our Honeymoon at The Mill!!!

Review Submitted: September 5, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
When we were looking for a place to spend our honeymoon, we were looking for peace and tranquility, seclusion, and a dream setting with breathtaking views. Not much to ask !!! but it's exactly what we found with The Mill.
The location was just out of this world, with views over the Sierra Nevada and within a short drive to Berchules and Cadiar, which sell great locally produced vegetables, fish and wine. What more could we ask for.
Robin himself was superb. We arrived on a bank holiday with few shops open but he'd made sure we had bread / butter etc, and was able to recommend local restaurants and bars. He was at hand if we needed him (which we didn't) but it was nice to know. He gave us some invaluable parking advice if you're planning a trip to Granada.
We would recommend The Mill to couples or groups of friends looking to get away from everything or to do some walking.
Things we are missing: the hot tub, the pool, the heat, the views, the wine, the sound of crickets and waterfalls at night, star gazing from the terrace, fantastic food, location location location.

What a marvelous place to discover!

Review Submitted: July 4, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
This property has real magic. It's in a secluded place but is just a 2 minute drive from the nearest village and a 15 minute drive from the nearest town. The pool, hot tub, barbeque were very nice extras but the very best part of this place is the fact it has it's own waterfalls and stream where you can explore and paddle. The sound of the rushing water is very relaxing. The house has everything you'll need to make yourself comfortable and there are books on recommended places to shop, visit, country walks, all written by guests which is a great help.
For those who are dependant on internet for any reason, you will find the townhall in Juviles provides this, just a 2 min drive away.
The country roads in this area are in a very good state. People are very friendly in the villages and towns
The house itself is higgledy piggledy, making it fun not only for children but for adults too, lots of hiding places. There a lots of different outside areas so there's a space for everyone.
As a rule I don't go back to the same holiday home twice, even though all the places I've stayed have been good. I would make an exception for this property and I wouldn't hesitate on returning as we didn't manage to do all we wanted and I feel that a holiday here at any time of year would be enjoyable- and different too, due to the changing scenery.
For those who like star gazing- this is definitely the place. No street lights, car lights, towns near to contaminate the night sky.
Nature lovers will find it very interesting. I never saw so many types of butterflies in one place and lizards too. You can here the goats on the mountain side sometimes.
Granada and the Alhambra make a very interesting day out. If you go in summer take sun block, a cap and a fan as it can be hot.
The service Robin and his assistants give is excellent. All is well explained and easy to use. They are on hand by phone should you want to ask something or need advice.
All in all, a wonderful holiday, a house full of character and worth going back just for those waterfalls.

A Wonderfully Unique Secluded Holiday Home

Review Submitted: October 7, 2010 Date of Stay: September 2010
The Mill House is a totally unique and private place to stay, but close to traditional Spanish village life with food shops and tavernas to enjoy. Being set in its own valley with lovely views, the waterfall and stream running alongside, the swimming pool and the hot tub, made for a wonderful relaxing holiday. We hardly left the house because it was so good, but we also drove the quiet winding mountain roads to see the lovely white villages "tumbling" down the hillsides, the vastness of the stunning views and the peace and quiet. The property is excellently maintained and has everything you could need. Robin met us at the property and told us all its little quirks to look out for, which added to it's character and advised us where the best places to eat or shop or just enjoy a drive to. We would totally recommend the Mill if you want to get away from it all, you won't be disappointed.

Just as fabulous the second time

Review Submitted: August 30, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
After a lovely holiday at the Mill three years ago we promised ourselves that one day we would go back. Our second time at the Mill was just as good as we remembered and we loved every moment. The weather was a bit unstable so we adjusted our activities - on hot days we stayed around the Mill, enjoying the river and the pool and never getting tired of the magnificent views. On the cooler days we took a few of the walks described in 'Holiday walks in the Alpujarras' with our 12 year old twin daughters leading the way. Nothing like coming 'home' after an adventurous climb around the Fuerte (about a 3 hr walk) and jumping into the pool or enjoying a cold drink on the terrace!

We had a fabulous holiday and still marvel at how beautifully the Mill was restored. It is one of the nicest places we ever booked for a holiday and perfect for anyone looking for seclusion, rest and nature in a beautiful and comfortable place full of character!
