Our second home

Review Submitted: October 3, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
There is a saying that you should never go to the same place twice as it's never as good. Having driven 1,700 miles back to La Roqueta it was even BETTER! When we arrived at the villa, Alan and Jeanette were there to welcome us. It was like meeting old friends.
The villa was just as we remembered, absolutely fabulous. La Roqueta was spotlessly clean, the fridge was stocked up with essential food items to keep us going and if we'd asked they would have been more than happy to buy anything else we may have needed. We settled in, had a much needed coffee, then went food shopping. True to her word Jeanette told us where we could find Cheddar Cheese.
There have been a few additions since last year with more sun beds, bikes and play things for the pool, which was still maintained to an exceptionally high standard.
We visited Valencia and Alicante and Alan was able to tell us about the trains, times, prices and best places to park etc.On the way back from Alicante we stopped at the Carrefour Hypermarket where you can buy anything you might be missing from home.Nearby Xativa is a beautiful town where we had a wander round with the dogs. There are lots of shops and many pavement restaurants to choose from. Pau Clar, a short drive away on the outskirts of Ontinyent, is a beautiful walk with lovely rock pools and waterfalls that we didn't manage to fit in last year and are glad we made the effort this time.
What we love about La Roqueta is the peace and quiet of relaxing by the pool or on the veranda. In the evenings we sat on the veranda and watched the sun set. We took photo's but as my husband said they just don't do justice and you really have to come and see for yourself the myriad of gold, orange, purple, blue and yellow that lights up the sky as the sun goes down behind the mountains, it really was magical to watch.
There were small items which had been broken by previous visitors. Once I mentioned these they were replaced the following day. Future visitors, please just say because if they don't know they can't replace it.
We went out for a meal to a lovely Spanish pizzeria bar where the owner was really friendly. The pizzas were great and you can get the biggest plate of chips there and they taste fantastic. Alan had promised to introduce my husband to the boccadillo a French baguette with 10 sausages & bacon for about £3. As we waved goodbye to Alan and Jeanette, there remains only one thing we did not like…the fact that we had to leave!!!

This is "real Spain".

Review Submitted: September 5, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
My wife, children (aged 5&4) and I stayed at this traditional Spanish villa for two weeks in August. It was perfect. The villa itself was spacious and spotlessly clean and well stocked with all the home comforts. The grounds and pool area were even more spectacular! The ground are completely enclosed and there is a gate on the pool area so there was masses of space for children to play safely.  The large pool was a huge hit with the kids.

The villa itself is located at the end of a urbanisation with nowhere really to walk to however why would you need to when you can sit either on the terrace or at the side of the pool in private beautiful settings. The town of Ontinyent is a 10 minute drive away with lots of places to eat and drink and full of fantastic Panaderia's. We were lucky enough to be there for the annual festival which was an amazing experience.

There are many blue flag beaches within an hours drive and we would highly recommend Oliva beach. The city and beach of Valencia are also within an hour and well worth a visit. Eat lunch like the spanish in many of the restaurants in the area for around 8 euros per person for 3  courses including a bottle of wine! Also you must visit one of the local bodega's for the experience where the wine, albeit a peculiar, specific taste, was 1 euro per litre served from a huge vat.

Alan and Jeanette, the owners, were extremely polite and helpful and gave us a lot of advise about the local area. One thing they do not tell you before you visit is the additional extras they provide such as beach towels, bikes, parasols, deck chairs  for the beach and even cool box and ice packs to keep the picnics cool.

A wonderful holiday in real Spain, fantastic villa and beautiful surroundings. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: What a lovely family, this is. We were a little wary having two toddlers stay at our villa, but there was absolutely no need to worry. The children were very well behaved and polite. The expressions on the children´s faces, when they seen the pool, told us that they were going to enjoy their stay. The weather was good throughout the two weeks, which gave the family ample opportunity to enjoy the pool and gardens, and explore the local areas.
Speaking to them, it was obvious that the parents had a likening for the town of Oliva. They also, and probably the children too, had a great passion for eating out. With so many tapas bars and restaurants to choose from, both here in Ontinyent and in Oliva, there was no way anyone was going to go to bed hungry.
It was fortunate that they were here in Ontinyent, when the town held its "moros y cristianos" festival. It takes place over several days, with a very colorful and spectacular procession of people and animals, numbering approx. 10,000, parading the streets.
The beach towels, cool box and beach chairs etc are a recent addition to what is supplied for the use of our guests. We´ll ensure that these items are listed in the amenities section of our listing.
At the end of their stay, the villa was left in an exceptionally clean condition, which was most appreciated.
It´s very possible that we may see them all again, in the future, but whether they book with us again, may be a "toss up" between our villa and a property in Oliva. Either way, we look forward to seeing them all again.
A truly wonderful family, and we wish them well for the future.

Villa Roqueta - "A little jewel"

Review Submitted: September 3, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
The road up to the Villa is a little rough but once you get used to it, it is fine and easy to navigate. The Villa Roqueta itself, is a little jewel of a finca nestled away at the end of a very quiet lane where there are a number of other fincas. When we arrived and saw the finca and its setting, it took our breath away as it was just as we imagined it would be, a typical, traditional Spanish finca. It is clean, bright, has all mod cons and a real feeling of a "home". The shower in particular is excellent and the air conditioning in the living room was a god send. It boasts a huge terrace where we sat for breakfast and evening meals and where our 5 dogs lay during the day to get out of the sun. The British owners. Alan and Jeanette. were very friendly popping over twice weekly to carry out maintenance but were so unobtrusive, you would never have known they were there. They were always at the end of a phone if you needed anything. The swimming pool was a fantastic "essential" maintained to a very high standard. The huge enclosed gardens (we frequently mislaid the dogs due to the size), ensured much privacy as well as boasting their own fig and olive trees. The immediate area was peaceful and quiet and not much noise from neighbours, although again they were friendly. The people of Ontinyent were friendly and keen to help, although very few speak any English including those who work in shops so a phrase book and dictionary is essential. There were plenty of supermarkets and shops to keep your interest. My husband, a keen cyclist, took his bike and found the surrounding roads fantastic to cycle. The villa is not far from the road which links to the main motorway for Alicante and Valencia for those looking for bigger shops. If you are looking for a taste of the real Spain, then look no further than the Villa Roqueta. There are only 2 disadvantages that we found - the 1st being that there was no cheddar cheese on sale and the 2nd - that we had to leave the Villa to come home!!!!!

Owner's Response: We couldn't have wished for a nicer couple to rent our villa, than Shirley and Paul. It was an absolute pleasure meeting them. The short conversations we shared with them were interesting and sometimes amusing. Their five small dogs were usually well behaved and very friendly. At the end of their stay,Paul and Shirley left the villa, and grounds, in an extremely clean state, which was much appreciated. Seeing them all drive off on their journey home was sad. We sincerely hope that they may all return another year, and we get the opportunity to show them where mature cheddar cheese can be bought locally.
