Olmares apartments in the Picos de Europa mountains

Three spacious completely self-contained apartments. To afford maximum privacy and peace two of these apartments are let to only 2 people per apartment. One has a balcony and the other a terrace, each with garden furniture and running the full width of the apartment with french doors opening onto the spectacular view across the valley to the mountains beyond. The third apartment sleeps 4 people, has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, its own terrace and eating-out area. Comfort is the by-word – high quality twin beds, duvets, cotton sheets, soft towels with central heating throughout but cool in summer. Fully equipped kitchen, high pressure shower, heated towel-rails etc. This part of the Liébana Valley remains unspoilt with first rate walking, climbing, bird-watching and wild flowers. The coast with its white sandy beaches is only an hour away through the dramatic Hermida Gorge.

The ‘balcony’ apartment has a bedroom with comfortable twin beds, duvets, extra pillows and blankets. The bathroom has bath, pressure shower, heated towel rail and soft towels. The living area has a well equipped kitchen, a dining area and sitting room area with a polished chestnut floor giving a ‘home’ feeling. There is a comfortable sofa and armchair, coffee table, reading lamps, bookcase and TV with UK satellite and Spanish channels. The entire front wall of the sitting room is of glass – windows and french doors leading onto the balcony. The very substantial wood balcony with garden furniture runs the full width of the apartment. It’s perfect for eating out, relaxing, bird-watching and enjoying the magnificent view. The entire apartment is centrally heated. The apartment is for 2 people – either friends or a couple but is not suitable for children.

Basieda is a remote hamlet built into the mountainside 15km from Potes in the Picos de Europa. The Picos de Europa are the most impressive part of the Cordillera de Cantabrica mountain range of the North of Spain. Basieda can be reached by ferry to Santander or Bilbao, by flights to Bilbao, Santander or Madrid or by road through France. The Picos de Europa mountains are a paradise for walking and climbing with magnificent flora and fauna.

  • Prices are for the apartment and not per person. Also your stay with us can normally start on any day of the week to allow you to take advantage of cheaper mid-week airfares. There is a refundable deposit of €60 against breakages or extra cleaning. We ask for a 25% deposit to confirm the booking and the balance is payable on arrival. In the event of cancellation less than 8 weeks before your stay the 25% deposit is non-refundable.
    Prices include water, wood, electricity, central heating, bed-linen (real sheets, not nylon), towels & tea towels, bathroom soaps etc. and starter breakfast pack.
    Water is supplied direct from the mountain streams and this is drinkable, we like it, but you may prefer to drink bottled water.

Behind the apartment there is a lovely cool courtyard where you will find the barbecue and off it are the laundry room and the large communal sitting room. This beautiful room with picture windows has a mezzanine floor with giant TV and DVD player. There is a small library of paperbacks and some tapes and Spanish grammar books too. On the main floor, there is a library of reference books on birds, wildflowers, mushrooms, moths and butterflies etc. together with guide books on walking, biking, and maps covering the area.. This room is centrally heated but there is also a splendid and very efficient wood-burning stove for cool nights in the Spring and Autumn. In the near future we will be providing an internet connection in this communal sitting room.

We, Richard Beazley and Suzanne Strevens, have lived here for the past 19 years and are well integrated into village life. We have a good knowledge of what the area has to offer and can help you get the best from your stay with us. The climate of this sheltered valley is almost Mediterranean - a genuine sunny, warm, dry micro-climate. Its worth noting that the sea with a fantastic beach is just an hour away for when you want a sea change! The nearest town for shopping and arranging outdoor activities is Potes, 15kms. away. There are 4 good local restaurants - 2 best for lunch and the others for lunch and/or dinner. Delicious bread baked in wood-fired ovens is brought up the mountain every second day.

Relax: de-stress and enjoy the beauty and peace of this unspoilt place. Take in the pure air, the sun, the bright starry nights - do nothing or... Walk: the walking round here is marvellous and as easy or difficult as you choose. You will find maps and ideas in the communal sitting room. We will help and advise when you want. Birding, flowers and trees: Quite exceptional for its variety of all these due to its remoteness. The dawn chorus can make you feel happy to be alive and the plentifulness and variety of flowers can make a walk seem like going through a perfect rock-garden. Historical interest: Liebana is steeped in history so there are lots of places to visit - many of them within walking distance of Basieda.

After all the above, the cool, shady courtyard behind the apartment will seem like heaven. Sit down here, have a drink, cook something on the barbecue, if you want, meet others who’ve had a similar day or sit on your private terrace or balcony and enjoy the perfect peace of the place.
