Beautifully restored farmhouse and cottage in spectacular location
Casa Mauri is a beautifully restored stone farmhouse impressively situated on a rock outcrop in the village of Santa Engracia in the Catalan Pyrenees. The Rough Guide to the Pyrenees describes Santa Engracia as 'surely the most spectacularly set village in Catalunya'. Views from the property are stunning, looking down over the the Tremp valley and its two lakes. From the pinnacle on which Santa Engracia is situated, a 360 degree panorama reveals the snow-capped Pyrenees. Casa Mauri has been lovingly restored by its English owners, conserving the original thick stone walls and beamed ceilings whilst providing clean, modern and spacious facilities. We have two properties to offer, situated at right angles around a picturesque walled courtyard. The region is quiet and unspoilt providing the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are year-round activities of interest- many outdoor sports, a wide range of birds, wild flowers, butterflies, Romanesque architecture, dinosaur footprints.

Santa Engracia is situated at a height of 1000m, 12km from the market town of Tremp. Tremp is an attractive small town. Within the remains of the old town walls, the streets of the old town are pedestrianised. The newer section has a tree-lined rambla where drinks and tapas can be enjoyed in the summer months. Tremp offers all basic facilities, including outdoor pools, bars and restaurants, post office, banks, supermarkets plus the more traditional butchers, fishmongers and grocers. The lake,a 15 min. drive from Santa Engracia, is popular for swimming and canoes and pedaloes can be hired. More adventurous sports are also available in the region. There are many spectacular gorges in the area, including the Terradets, the Collegats with its Gaudiesque natural rock structures and the Mont Rebei gorge with footpath cut into the cliff side. A visit to the beautiful Aiguestortes National Park 90 mins. drive away is a must. The duty-free haven of Andorra is also 90 mins. from the village.

A wide range of outdoor activities
Walking can be enjoyed by all from the casual stroller to the mountaineer. Much of the walking in the area makes use of old mule and sheep tracks and forestry roads. The walking and scenery are fascinating in their variety. The region in recent years has become very popular with climbers, Vilanova de Meia and the Terradets being two popular sites. There are also spectacular gorges to explore. The region offers many water sports, including canoeing and white water rafting. A number of places offer horse riding. Other outdoor activities available are swimming, fishing, archery, bungy jumping, quad bikes, hang-gliding and paragliding. There are a number of ski resorts around 75 mins drive away. If you fancy slightly less energetic activities there are always the many picturesque and interesting villages to explore and in Autumn the spectacular autumn colours make a wonderful photographic target. At night the clear and light-free skies provide wonderful starry panoramas.
Nature- lover's paradise.
The region is very popular with ornithologists and amateur bird-spotters. The most common bird in the village is the black redstart. Amongst many other birds nesting in the village is the blue rock thrush and hoopoes and bee-eaters are common. Griffon vultures are a frequent sight and lammergeiers not uncommon. Wild flowers are many and varied and particularly spectacular on the meadowy-slopes of the Pyrenees. There are also numerous varieties of butterfly in the region.
A region steeped in history
Catalonia is famous for its many Romanesque churches, castles and towers. There is a Romanesque watchtower on the rock of Santa Engracia itself. In Cretaceous times Santa Engracia was situated on the Atlantic coast. Just outside the nearby Roman town of Isona is a field of dinosaur footprints. Dinosaur eggs can be seen in the local museum. There is also a set of dinosaur prints on the rock of Santa Engracia!
Other Activities rafting, canoeing, quads, climbing,bird-watching, wild flowers, butterflies

Que lugar tan estupendo! (I don't yet know enough superlatives in Spanish to say what I want to!) The scenery and the meals couldn't have been better, the weather too. Fantastic views from the terrace by day and by night. Thankyou for a super time and for making us feel so welcome.
Absolute top spot. One of the best hols we've had. Took a crowbar to get me out of here.
We have had the most wonderful time in this beautiful and peaceful place. All the comments about the incredible achievement of Mike and Anne in creating this haven are more than justified. What, however, is so amazing is their ability to spoil you with their endless kindness without in any way being intrusive- a remarkable gift. (Crispin Blunt MP)
All good things must come to an end. Alas we should have booked for a longer stay.
Wow! Not only the Pyrenees but also simply the best self-catering accomm. we have ever stayed in.
Atmosphere, views, tranquility, food and hospitality that will not be forgotten or beaten.
