But if after a few days' relaxation you need to get out and about, 10 minutes through beautiful countryside from the Finca there is the village of Fuente del Conde with bar/restaurant and a supermarket. A variety of local restaurants within 15 mins drive. Nearest big towns are picturesque Iznajar and bustling Antequera (more bars, restaurants and night-life here). Almendrillo is uniquely placed within an hour and a quarter of Granada and Cordoba, and the beaches of Malaga and Motril. Slightly further away lie Sevilla and Ronda, or to the east the romantic Alpujarras

Close to home there is horse-riding for all ages and abilities, walking in the Torcal national park, Wolf Park, further afield water-park attractions, marine parks, a zoo.

At Almendrillo you can take one of our mountain bikes to visit local farms for baby goats, sheep, peacocks or see hoopoes, eagles and other Spanish wild birds.

By far the best i've stayed in

Review Submitted: October 11, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
An amazing experience! Beautiful house in a moorish style makes you feel like you are in Morocco. Breathtaking views of the mountains from terraces, especially good when viewed from the hammocks with a book and a cool drink. Children running round like a little tribe in the safety of the grounds, not to mention lounging by the great pool watching the children have the time of their lives and as the evening draws in watching swifts swoop down over the pool. Evening meals and dancing in the courtyard under a tree full of finches that returned every evening, watching the many shooting stars and the milky way in skys free from light pollution. All cherished memories, would highly recommend this property, its like a village all to yourself, i miss it still.

Great two- week family holiday

Review Submitted: August 29, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
We stayed at Mike and Emma's house for two weeks this summer. We had a large group (27 total)-- consisting of babies, children, adults and grandparents. Everyone felt completely comfortable, with plenty of space to hang out with each other or get away to be alone to read or rest. The main house and casita are spacious, but we spent most of our time outside enjoying all the different sitting areas and views. We circulated between time at the pool- which is enormous, dinner in the courtyard with the outdoor kitchen, in the side yard where Mike and Emma have a playhouse, hammocks, and "rock wall" for the kids to enjoy, and in the backyard where the ping pong tables are. There are beautiful old trees to climb, and hammocks scattered in different areas of the property.
While we wanted the children to see more of the Spanish culture, they did not want to leave the Finca. Mike found us a great baby sitter, so that the kids could stay and we could do day trips. You don't have to worry about packing entertainment for the kids- Mike provides more than enough toys, games, books, scooters, etc for all to enjoy. Mike also provided gates for the stairways since we had toddlers in our group.
If you decide to stay at the Finca, be prepared to do some driving. There is a great local restaurant below the Finca, called Antonio's and a small store for necessities. But, unless you are in really good shape, it is quite a difficult hike on foot, especially with the walk back up to the house. Towns with the larger grocery stores, where you will need to go to get your food for the week, are a good 40 minutes away. There are several really nice towns to visit- Loja, Antequera, Iznajar, and Rute are just a few of them. Because you are surrounded by the smaller, more rural cities, keep the Spanish schedule in mind as you plan your activities. You have to know that you will have a little drive and that the towns pretty much shut down in the heat of the day. Some larger cities, like Granada and Malaga are just an hour away. We did one overnight to Sevilla, which was only a two hour drive. There are some really easy and fun day trips close to the property.
This is the perfect place to come, especially if you have small children or older adults. It is safe, private, and comfortable. It's really nice to be able to tour many beautiful, interesting parts of Spain, but also to be able to come home to cook and swim and enjoy each other in an incredibly beautiful setting.

la campagne andalouse

Review Submitted: August 22, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011

Astonishing views!

Review Submitted: August 14, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
After what feels like rather a hair-raising drive up from the village, the views that open up after a short descent to El Almendrillo are breathtaking. For miles and miles across a wide valley, there is no more than a scattering of houses until the hills rise again on the far horizon.
The finca is attractive and feels welcoming, with the courtyard and its long yellow table, trailing vine and other plants. The inside is beautifully decorated (to my taste, i.e., mostly white / uncluttered, but with splashes of colour or features such as exposed beams) and well equipped. The casita is a little more modern in style and the main farmhouse more traditional.
It useful to have an outdoor kitchen in the courtyard - and quite fun - and lovely to eat there together as a large family in the evening and to remain outside as the sun goes down.
There are many terraces and other places to sit, in and out of the sun, both of which being required at different times!
The pool is excellent - I have rented many properties such as this one but have not found one as large as this. It has wonderful views and a useful shaded area at one end, as well as sunbeds and a shower on hand. Swimming alone, first thing in the morning, watching the hills across the valley lighting up was a real treat for me!
The facilities are comprehensive: table tennis, pool, bikes, TVs etc. - more than enough to keep a large family party of all ages well-occupied for a week.

Disadvantages?
The ride up and down to the village wasn't to everyone's taste in our group, and our hire car didn't seem to like reversing up the hill to find a passing place! (which is another story...)
It was later than we expected before we could get into some of the rooms because the cleaners were still working and it took a little time to organise what needed to be in each house as things seemed to have been a little unevenly distributed by the previous residents. But, these things were trivial and easily dealt with.

We seem to have participated in the trend for multi-generational birthday celebrations at El Almendrillo - my mother's 80th being the reason for our family gathering in Andalucia. I would have no hesitation in recommending this house for a similar group of people.
