Golf Course and tennis and massage:
For the keen golfer the western Algarve, Costa de la Luz, Huelva and the Eastern Algarve are as yet “undiscovered', certainly when compared to the eastern Algarve and the Costas. Green fees are lower, the courses less crowded & less busy, making it much easier to get a start time that you want & to play a round in reasonable time & without delay. They are also some of best courses in all of Spain.
There are 2 excellent courses nearby, Isla Canela & the international standard Islantilla, winter home of the Swedish & Danish Golf Unions (please contact us for details). Facilities incl. Driving Ranges, Putting & Chipping Greens, Practice Bunkers, Resident Golf Pro. Isla Canela also has 2 international standard bowling greens, tennis courts & football training areas. Other nearby courses are Costa Esuri, El Rompido, Nuevo Portil, Castro Marim, Quinta de Cima and Quinta da Ria.
Tennis courts can be booked by the sports hall and football stadium in Isla Cristina.
Local Activities:
As an active fishing town, Isla Cristina has a market with an enviable selection of open sea fish which are caught daily. Fresh fruit and vegetable can also be bought here. The harbour side factories sell Isla Cristina's famous canned tuna and mackerel and salted fish.
For younger family, on the road into Cartaya (appr. 30 mins) you will find Kartodromo de Cartaya open year round, & the very popular Aquopolis water park, opens middle of June - 1st week in September. 45 mins over the border into Portugal, near to Faro, you will find the Aqualand water park, the essential day out according to some of our guests from past years.
The area is a wildlife haven, from the Marismas at Isla Canela with flamigo and other wildfowl, to the National Park at Donana (45 mins drive) one of the most important nature reserves in Europe. Other places of interest are Huelva, from where Columbus sailed to the New World; El Rocio, famous for the annual pilgrimage; and Andalucian capital, Seville.
Restaurants, Cafes and Churreria:
Many restaurants in the area. Specialities are fresh sea fish, mussels, prawns, lobsters etc and lamb, Iberian meat, jamon & sausages.. Not expensive to dine out. Owners favourites: El Estudiante (Avda Estremadura), La Gola.
Breakfast of delectable coffee with churros (long pancake sticks) and freshly squeezed orange juice is highly recommended on the Gran Via in Isla Cristina.
A chiringuito (beach hut cafe and restaurant) is 200m along the beach, at Caita Azul. The friendly Manolo and his family cook and serve excellent quality lunch, dinner and coffee and the sea front is just wonderful.
