'Thilina' is a detached chalet located 3 km from the spectacularly scenic, palm-fringed bays and beaches of Hikkaduwa, a busy tourist metropolis on the south coast. 'Thilina' is a peaceful haven located in a tranquil glade about 30 yards from the main house where the Sri Lankan family (mother, father and two young sons), who will be looking after you during your stay, live.

Hikkaduwa lies at the heart of the palm-fringed West coast, conveniently placed for the historic town of Galle. This small beach resort sprang to prominence as a favourite haunt on the Sixties backpacker trail. It is now showing signs of regaining its youthful, informal feel, with one of the best surfing beaches in Sri Lanka, a good scattering of decent beachside bars (particularly lively at weekends), restaurants, sporadically-appearing night clubs and great-value fish restaurants. The Kosgoda turtle hatchery and Sinharaja rain forest are among nearby attractions. About 20km from Hikkaduwa is Galle, the most important town in the south. Its Dutch fort area, with its mighty ramparts, encloses some wonderful examples of colonial architecture. The diving season along the south coast is November to April and Hikkaduwa has the best diving schools and one of the best surfing beaches. International surfing championships in November are a special attraction.

Transport from/to Colombo International Airport: The head of the Sri Lankan family who lives in the main house near to chalet 'Thilina' operates a tour guide/transport service with his own vehicle and, should you wish, he can collect you from Colombo international airport (Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake) on your arrival and take you straight to Hikkaduwa. At the end of your stay, he can also return you to the airport. The distance from the airport to Hikkaduwa is about 130 kms and the journey can take up to 4 hours at peak traffic times. The one-way charge for pick up at the airport is Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR) 7,500 (approx £45); the one-way charge for drop-off at the airport is Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR) 7,000 (approx £40). Any tours of the island can also be arranged according to your chosen itinerary and duration.

Drinks from fridge: Two bottles of complimentary water provided on arrival.

We have just got back home after 3 weeks there and loved the place. Photos can't do justice to the luxuriant tropical surroundings, especially around dusk when the birds and insects start calling out. Level and quality of equipment is good. The owner has already thought of things like torch and umbrella, so don't bother packing your own. Obviously it is not on the beach, but the tuk-tuk drive down there all becomes part of the daily flow after a day or so. The couple who look after the house are charming. Loku can cook you an authentic curry, and Udaya can organise and drive you on a sightseeing tour of the island. Finally having breakfast brought to your veranda every morning is a very nice feature.

A delightful chalet on the jungle side and a delightful family overseeing the property and the stay. The property far exceeded our expectations, as did the hospitality given to us by Udaya and his family.

'Had a super and very comfortable stay here. No traffic or aeroplane noise, just the natural sounds of the jungle. Udaya and Loku were delightful hosts and looked after us extremely well.' MF - Dec 05.
