A restored luxury Fort villa within the old Dutch Galle Fort with charming courtyard and pool. Sleeps 6 in 3 double bedrooms with a further room containing 2 bunks, adult size. This is an ideal romantic hideaway for honeymooners or for enjoyment by families with children who can safely explore The Fort surrounded by the Indian Ocean. Nearby, a short tuk-tuk ride away is Unawatuna voted the prettiest bay in the World with some great restaurants right on the sandy beach and safe swimming, snorkeling, nightlife, disco. Diving can be organised from here. Surfing at Merissa and Hikkaduwa. Cricket. Airport transfers and Kandy tours available. The Fort was untouched by the 2004 tsunami. A daily maid is provided in the rate and we have an excellent cook available at a nominal weekly rate. Restaurants in The Fort: Galle Fort Hotel, Ammangalle and Spa, The Rampart Hotel, The Printers.

Sri Lanka, near Unwatuna, south coast. Galle Fort boasts of a long history stretching back centuries, even before the Portuguese, Dutch and British Colonial days. Today it is home to the historic 90 acre preserved Dutch Fort, declared an archaeological reserve by the UN since 1969. This walled city is the slow beating heart of Galle, bearing witness to its past through the near crumbling architecture of grand old buildings, street names and Dutch churches. Galle is the only place in Sri Lanka that still retains an old world atmosphere. The sounds of Galle are the call to prayer from Mosques, Pali chants from Buddhist temples, fish sellers and tinkers hawking their wares on Main Street. Its fine old colonial mansions, Galle Fort Hotel, Ammangalle, and Lighthouse Hotel nearby make Galle Fort a hauntingly beautiful escape into the past. Enter through the 'old' Dutch Gate or the 'new' English one. The Villa is close to the Ramparts and small beaches that are great for a morning dip.

  • We can arrange (as an extra) for your own in house Cook (Sri Lankan food) during your stay if required. Bottled water also supplied.
    Airport transfer available if required in air conditioned vehicle. Tours also arranged: Yala National Park, Turtle Hatchery, Snake Farm, The Cultural Triangle, elephant orphanage, tea country, mountains and waterfalls and much much more. Notes: There are 2 double bedrooms downstairs and one of these has a smaller room off it with 2 inset bunk beds suitable for children. Meals: a cook can be provided at a small cost, and the village shop is close by if you want to go it alone. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped. There are several good places to eat on The Fort. We have a wonderful daily maid for cleaning and washing.

Tsunami: Galle Fort was unaffected by the Tsunami due to the high walls of the fortress. However, future plans for the Galle town area which was affected by the tsunami include a new international test cricket ground scheduled to be moved to nearby Koggala within a new sports stadium complex. Flights are available from Colombo to Koggola Air Strip with Sri Lankan Airlines. An 18 hole golf course is scheduled for Koggola and a yachting marina in Galle.

This is a fabulous hideaway for honeymooners. We had a wonderful time in this lovely Villa which is spotless and well equipped. The pool is wonderful and the roof terrace is a great place for an evening drink and dinner after the heat of the day disappears. There is loads to see and do in The Fort - we found a lovely old gem shop (it is said that Galle is where King Soloman obtained his gems) and had a stunning gold ring designed and made very cheaply. Take lunch and a drink on the terrace of the Galle Fort Hotel and watch the world leisurely pass by. For a really good beach and swimming, Unawatuna - 5 minutes in a three wheeler from outside the Villa, is a must. Try garlic prawns or the lobster at the Banana Garden Restaurant. Cheap and fabulous. The sea comes within 3 metres of your table. We will be back for our first anniversary! Natashia and Charles, London EC1,UK
