The Central Sweden coastline is ideal for visitors to enjoy a boat tour from Stockholm and other ports around Lake Mälaren during spring, summer and autumn. The long summer days offer great opportunities to sunbathe, hiking, cycling, swim in the sea or enjoy a picnic at one of the idyllic islands or on the Swedish mainland. Many of the castles and manor houses in the region offer special cultural events, in particular music, during the summer season.

Dalarna has a famous open-air theatre Dalhalla, which is set in an old limestone quarry and holds music and opera events in summer. There are many sporting activities available in Central Sweden with fishing popular throughout, including city angling in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Whilst winter sports are mainly undertaken in the north, there are some resorts in the central regions as well as many water sports too.

There is a good mix of places to eat in Central Sweden with numerous restaurants, bars, inns and cafes. The island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren, an archaeological Viking settlement of Birka, features a museum and is on Unesco’s World Heritage List. The Furuvik amusement park near the town of Gävle features a zoo, circus and a large number of rides and attractions for children.

The area around Stockholm, Uppsala and Lake Mälaren and the Bergslagen region in particular have many historic places of interest such as the Gripsholm castle near the town of Mariefred. Weather in Central Sweden

The winter days in Central Sweden are short and cold with the average high temperature in January as low as -1C, with only six hours of daylight. However, to some people’s surprise the summer can be as warm as Southern England, with the average high in July 22C and as much as 19 hours of daylight. Around April and October the temperatures can be quite fresh at an average of 9-10C.

Travel to Costa Central Sweden

Stockholm-Arlanda Airport has flights to and from most of Europe through the national carrier SAS. Along with Ryanair, SAS fly directly to Stockholm and Gothenburg from the UK and British Airways flies direct  to Stockholm. Direct services between the United States and Sweden are operated by SAS in cooperation with United Airlines. Taxis, car hire firms, trains, buses and coaches can all be found at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.

Eurolines offers scheduled coach services to Europe, including 27 destinations in Sweden. Ferry services carry visitors from Denmark to Gothenburg and from Eastern Europe to Stockholm.
