Climbing is what draws most visitors to the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, Switzerland. The summits of the Monch (the Monk) and Jungfrau (Young Lady) are relatively easy climbs, but those hoping to climb the Eiger (the Ogre) are in for a tough assent of one of the most notoriously challenging climbs in the Alps. The formidable north face of the Eiger has ascended into climbing legend, and those who complete the trip can return to their rental chalet with an almost unsurpassed sense of achievement. The approach to all of the climbs on the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau can be reaches by the incredible Jungfraubahn, a small train leaving from Interlakken and burrowing through the Eiger until its final destination in Jungfraujoch.

Under the frightening peaks, walking, hiking and mountain biking thrive. The stunning scenery can be enjoyed without the help of crampons, through the endless trails and paths which snake through the Alpine meadows, thick forests, glistening glaciers and along the shores of stunning mountain lakes.

Lauterbrunnen is a busy village at the opening of the Weisse Lutschine valley, often described as ‘impossibly beautiful’, and I can think of no better description. Taking a holiday property here is an ideal place to explore Bernese Oberland, by foot, Jungfraubahn, bicycle or car.

If you are intent on trying to conquer the north face of the Eiger, the resort of Wengen is perfectly situated at the foot of the Eiger Mountain. On the opposing side of the valley, stands Switzerland’s most famous skiing resort, Murren, the home of Alpine skiing. It is a great ski resort, especially for the experienced skier, and has hosted World Cup downhill and slalom events. Both of these resorts are ideal bases for walking holidays in the summer too.

Grindelwald is an idyllic alpine village which sits under the peak of the Jungfrau, with excellent cable car, train, walking and road links throughout the region.

The long hot summers which grace the north face of the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau, Switzerland are not warm enough to completely melt the snow caps, but do reach a lovely 25˚C during July and August, perfect for getting out and about from a holiday rental chalet in the area and enjoying the scenery and sport. Winter temperatures dip to below 0˚C, but without it, the famous Alpine skiing and excellent off-piste skiing would not be possible!
