Leysin, is a high mountain village in the French-speaking Vaud canton of Switzerland, south-facing, at 1260m, overlooking the Rhône Valley. Well-known for its unique climate, claiming to be the sunniest Swiss village, with low humidity, mountains shield Leysin from cold north winds. Leysin is exceptionally friendly - part of its charm is the busy local farming community. Many of Switzerland's finest wines are produced in the neighbouring vineyards, with excellent restaurants and shops in the village and surrounding district, featuring local produce, emphasising wine, cheese, honey and mushrooms. Leysin is linked to the Rhône valley A9 motorway at Aigle by road (kept clear in winter) and a classic mountain cog railway, with fast train connections direct to Geneva city, Geneva Airport and south to Italy. Montreux, Les Diablerets, Gstaad, Les Mosses, Rougemont, Château d'Oex and Villars are close by. Leysin: a unique village, in an exceptional situation with excellent transport options.

Further details for this holiday apartment rental in Leysin, Switzerland

Travel information - air: Air services to Geneva are excellent, especially from the UK. In addition to budget airlines (contact the property owners for details on low cost flight and car hire websites) it is worth checking fares on British Airways and Swiss - both airlines offer competitive rates on this route, frequently undercutting the no-frills operators. It can also be important to avoid peak-travel times (Friday evenings and Monday mornings can be particularly difficult) and flights can be very busy over the weekend, especially during the winter season. Geneva airport offers a wide range of car hire options (check to see whether your airline offers special car hire rates in addition to the specialist companies, also if arriving late, make sure your car hire desk will remain open) and the railway station in the airport offers direct connections via Geneva to Aigle, our nearest town, throughout the day (see below). At Aigle one changes onto the classic mountain cog railway for the 20min ascent to Leysin.

Travel information - rail: There are generous discounts available on the Swiss Railway system for frequent travelers and families (contact the owners for details on rail travel websites). Leysin has excellent rail connections to Geneva and directly through to Geneva Airport via Aigle; the service between Leysin and Aigle is a classic mountain cog railway which functions in most weather conditions. Services from Geneva Airport station start at 0630 each morning, with trains to Leysin every hour (via Aigle) through to 2130. On the return journey services run from 0530 through to 2130. Total journey time is around 1hr 50mins, with a quick transfer in Aigle. In Leysin there are 4 stops, with Leysin Village and Feydey offering connections to the free shuttle bus, which runs through the village (and stops outside the chalet) every hour. There are also three taxi services with minibus, for use outside the shuttle bus hours, from any Leysin station. A taxi from Aigle to Leysin is quite expensive (around SFr 75).

Travel information - road: The motorway system south of the North French channel ports is fast and efficient. From Geneva the motorway is excellent, bypassing Lausanne and Montreux, with superb views of Lake Geneva across to France. One leaves the motorway at Aigle, to follow the mountain road for around 18kms up to Leysin. Total distance from Geneva airport is 125kms, and journey time around 1hr 30mins. All roads are kept clear in winter, though in snow and ice conditions 4-wheel drive or chains are reasonably essential (and in some conditions compulsory) on the mountain roads. Please contact the owners for details of route-planning websites, which can make the journey to Leysin very straight-forward from any point in Europe. Motorway restaurants, including the ubiquitous Mövenpick chain, are well worth using in Switzerland, and are well-equipped with shops, mini-markets, clean toilets and in many cases, WiFi (either free or nominal charge). There are three large supermarket complexes on the route from Geneva.

Ski: An attractive Vaud Alps resort, Leysin is traditionally recommended for beginners and intermediates, with good off-piste for advanced skiers and an international snowboarding reputation – “one of the top resorts in Switzerland for snowboarders .... 50km area having virtually no drag-lifts” (British Ski Club guide). Annual Nescafé championships utilises the superb half pipe. 61km of pistes available (14km protected by snow-making equipment), with 14 lifts and 7km of cross country skiing. Skiing from 1330m-2200m is uncrowded, with several traditional family mountain restaurants. Leysin has Europe’s largest toboggan park, excellent multi-lingual Swiss Ski School, ice rink and well-stocked ski hire shops. Ski passes can include neighbouring Villars, Les Diablerets (year round glacier skiing @ 3000m), Gryon and Les Mosses (kids under 9 ski free!). For recommended personal ski guides, sports/activities info. and weather/snow stats. websites for Leysin and local resorts. - contact owners.

Other Activities: squash, ice skating, tobogganing, curling, boules, mini-golf, bike park

'Fantastic place, very enjoyable time, wonderful views....', 'A glass of wine in the evening sunshine, accompanied by a symphony of cow bells...a memory of heaven to savour for a long time', '....had a fabulous holiday, lots of snow and brilliant sunshine....after just two lessons the children were able to ski from top to the bottom of the mountain...', '....ski runs very picturesque, good skiing, lovely, unpredictable, healthy, few days' break, many thanks...', '....peace, absolute peace...', '....our only problem was finding anyone who would talk in French! Everyone we met spoke fluent English - the local shop owners couldn't have been friendlier, and the restaurants were superb, varied and excellent value - we particularly liked La Fromagerie with imaginative local dishes, a fascinating cheese-making demonstration running throughout the evening (helped by our kids) and the village museum on the upper floors - magical!' '...local Classic cinema shows 1st run English films!'

Summer 2009

Review Submitted: November 12, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Stayed in the garden apartment for 9 nights. Lovely views and apartment has everything you could wish for even to the point of maps, guides, day trip info etc etc. Richard (the owner) and Lola the apartment manager could not have been more helpful. I can honestly say we have never received the level of attention to detail or welcome that they provide even in first calss hotels. The apartment is perfect for couples, very cosy. We tended to stay out all day, shopped at the Co-op and ate in the apartment. The village free bus stops at 17:00hrs and it is a good slog up hill for about 20 mins to get home from the village and/or station so i cant comment on the village at night. There are taxis but we only used ABC taxi (free phone at stations) to get from the station to the apartment on arrival cost 20 francs and the guy was not very friendly so if using i would advise to take Richards (the owner) advice and use Kojak Taxi's. I would recommend this chalet as it is absolutely lovely and Leysin has a lot to offer as a village and a base for day trips out. We had a Swiss Pass but be warned if you dont purchase tickets before getting on the train you get an 80 franc fine ( we witnessed this happen several times)

Immaculate, Modern Apartment & Beautiful Setting

Review Submitted: June 25, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We loved opening the windows and french doors of the garden apartment, smelling the lilacs in bloom & the freshly mown grass of the beautifully landscaped grounds and enjoying the world class mountain views. The apt. was immaculate and decorated in extremely fine taste; also very comfortable. The owners have seen to every detail. We really appreciated the thoughtfulness. We can't wait to go back next year.

A great property...

Review Submitted: May 19, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
Owned by great folks. If you are looking for a comfortable Swiss mountain vacation, your search is over. Our apartment was exceptionally well equipped, clean and comfortable. The views were awesome. Even occasional April showers could not spoil our stay. The welcome pack was amazingly generous and every imaginable detail is covered in the copious notes and instructions provided by the owners. The town of Leysin is quiet and friendly and offers pretty much everything you will need for a short stay but side trips throughtout the area are recommended. We enjoyed our time at Chalet Chimere and expect others will too.

Great Chalet, Beautiful Location

JoeF Reading, UK
Review Submitted: September 3, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
The condition of the property was excellent with pretty much all conveniences that are needed. These included dishwasher, microwave, food processor etc. The property was cleaned to a very high standard and they had thoughtfully provided a few essentials to get us started before getting round to a proper shop. I found it extremely useful to log onto the wireless broadband – an essential thing in order to find out things easily. The bathroom was great and hot water was no problem, nice to have a high pressure, steaming hot shower after a good 3 hour walking expedition. At the entrance to the chalet is a laundry room with washing machine and dryer - we didn't use it but very useful to have it there. There is a barbecue that you can use, bikes in the shed, prams/buggies in the shed. TV's in the bedroom and living room. Bottom line is pretty much everything you need is already there. Only thing you need to decide is are you going to eat out or in and then buy provisions accordingly.

We were not massively impressed with the eating places in Leysin - don't get me wrong there was nothing offensive about the restaurants there but they seemed a little overpriced and not quite what we were looking for. That said we didn't go to Switzerland for the food but for the views, walking, air etc - and these were incredible. Also the water straight from the tap has got to be the best I have tasted anywhere in the world - simply incredible. Like having the Volvic source in your kitchen !

The views were magnificent from the room. Also the notes provided are extremely useful for orientation to Leysin. The owners recommendation on the Rose wine (Oeuil de Perdix) from Coop is to be commended - a lovely bottle that I enjoyed on many occasions. I also recommend getting the soft pretzels available at the Coop - these are very fresh and tasty - you need to pick them up early otherwise they'll be gone.

In general – a fantastic chalet in a delightful spot of Switzerland and sensibly priced. I would be keen to return with some others and take the whole chalet. Highly recommended !
