Review of Sept 09 Holiday in Chateau d' Oex

Lisa and Keith Northumberland
Review Submitted: September 29, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We had a fornight in the apartment, in September, and It was wonderful from start to finish. The apartment is stunning and immacuately presented. It is also extremely well equippped wuth everything you might need. The views over the valley are lovely, and the Terrace is the best we have ever seen anywhere.
The pool area is lovely and clean. The gym is also superb. There is a nice lounge area with a self service bar, which was nice to have a pre dinner drink at, before going out.
We loved the village itself. Its a short walk to the main street, however there is fairly steep hill involved.) The locals were lovely and friendly and we had some georgous meals at Au Montraguard, and for a cheaper option at the Brasserie in the main square. The deserts at the Brasserie are amazing (especially the apple tart.)
If your watching costs, they serve a lunch time and evening special which is brilliant value.
Having a hire car proved useful although the train service seems excellent providing you get a Goldon Pass in Advance, if not its very expensive to travel. Gastaad is nice to visit to look at all the designer shops. Our favourite village was Gruyers (the chocolate factory at Broc) is close to Gruyers and well worth a visit also. We got in for free, if we were happy to look around ourselves.
For a bit of adventure there is the Glasier 3000, where you can take two cables cars up, it has husky rides and a huge toboggon ride as well as amazing views. We drove nearly two hours to Zermatt, and took 3 cable cars 4000 metres up to see the Matahorn. This was amazing and well worth the cost and time.
Thre is a co-op in the village, which although cheaper then the local shops, its worth going to try the lovely cakes and pastries in the village shops, they are lovely.
All in all we had a fantastic time, definately want to return to ski one day.

It is one of rare event to find the apartment and location better than the picture at the site, and this what I found
this apartment is place for peace if you are looking for relaxation ,have unbelievable views ,large balcony and fully equipped kitchen
The swimming pool is temp controlled, and at the site nice sauna and Jim
The ground floor reception and sitting area is great for reading , have drink from the well equipped and self service bar, and I found it great idea to be self service
The access to the village is easy by train, but you may need car to move around otherwise the train station 20mint walking , behind the station big supermarket for shopping ,
In the way to the apartment you will find the sport centre where you can play different games
The village is small, population not more than 3000,but main things are available
I found it is nice place for quietness, enjoy the Swiss cheese, my children 17 and 12y they enjoy it and I am sure will go back
I strongly recommend it for small family

Comfortable and quiet flat with a beautiful view and good pool. Would recommend trips to the Gruyeres area for the town and chateau & the Moleson mountain for high level but flat contour wanderwegs. Also enjoyed the chocolate factory at Broc & the wonderful outdoor spa at Charmey. Also visit the Hongrin dam near La Lecherette and walk across the barrage - beautiful! Would recommend this to anyone seeking peace and quiet in a lovely area. But take your own computer otherwise, like us, you will have no access to the internet - very difficult to check in for return flight and keep tabs on other family members.

Second visit to this apartment and it did not disappoint again.
Well equipped, comfortable, clean and well maintained property with fantastic private terrace giving superb views over the valley and mountains.Swimming pool and fitness suite are also first class.
Village is well served with bank, post office, tourist office and excellent selection of shops and a supermarket.
Good choice of venues for eating out in village with our favourites being Au Montagnard and Brasserie L'Ours which offers barbeques in the square some evenings.
Chateau D'Oex is ideally suited for summer activities including walking, white water rafting, ballooning etc.

Hope to return in the future.
