Details for Summer Cottage 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6, 3 Bathrooms

The summer cottage is a former distillery which has been converted into a rustic summer cottage. It is not a luxury object, but it has everything that is needed. It is located on the most beautiful part of the farm with an absolutely breathtaking view. It has 3 floors, a ground floor with a kitchen, dining, shower & toilet and washing. Due to the old construction with its thick walls, it's nice and cool in summer. Direct access to the outdoor dining area on the top spot of the farm. On the first floor is a living room with two beds, and a fold out bed and a big window which displays one of the most beautiful views on lake Lucerne. There is also a bed room with a romantic double bed (two mattresses) and a fold out bed. Rooms are divided with part firm wall, part fordable door for the days. This floor exits without stairs to another garden patio. There is another floor directly under the roof which is not renovated, but it could be used in summer as an extra room with two beds.

Merlischachen is a village directly located on the lake shore of Lake Lucerne - near Lucerne (14 km to city center) It is very close to culture, nature and tourist attractions. The former sheep farm is in walking distance from the railway station, lake, shopping, village & restaurant. The farm has one of the most beautiful location in Central Switzerland with a full lake- and mountain view (the Swiss Alps). The motorway is a very convenient 5 minutes drive away. The Village has a gourmet restaurant and bar plus a great restaurant and 4-star hotel. In summer the houses are full of flowers which look great on the mainly wooden houses in the village centre. The great advantage of Merlischachen is that it still has a village feeling, but is very close to the town and highway without the disadvantage of the traffic, noise and pollution. Very near to Lucerne, Mount Pilatus, Mount Rigi, Mount Titlis and Engelberg

Notes: The cottage has a rustic feeling. It has no central heating, but can be heated electrically to a very warm temperature, but on a costly way. Therefore the Rental Cost in winter is the same price as in the spring and fall months. It has electric shudders to keep the heat out in summer and the cold out in winter. It has also two fans. We do respect the privacy of our guests. The nearbye Dog Holiday home has been closed at Oct. 31, 2009. So this is now a very quiet location

Quintessential Switzerland

Review Submitted: August 29, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Seven of us just recently returned from a two-week stay at George and Irene's comfortable Farmhouse in Merlischachen just a few minutes outside of Lucerne. We rented both the freestanding Summer Cottage and the Holiday Apartment located on the top floor of the main house. We had a perfectly wonderful time and found everything to be as presented in the website, but I think the owners are really modest in their description of the property. The views of the towering mountains and majestic lakes are absolutely spectacular from both the cottage and the apartment.....the pictures on the website just don't do justice to the real thing. The setting, complete with cowbells, is quintessential Switzerland, half expecting Heidi and Grandfather to knock at our door any minute. Only steps away from lovely Lucerne, the property is very peaceful and quiet. Also, I cannot overemphasize the convenience of the farm to everything, close to the train station, the boat dock on the lake, a small park and beach, post office, grocery stores, and just minutes away from Kussnacht and Lucerne. What else could you ask for? We had two cars for convenience sake and personally, I would not want to stay the whole time on the farm without a car, but it would be possible to use trains and other means of transportation. I returned from Italy by train, and I got off at the Merlischachen train station which is only a ten minute walk to the farmhouse.

As for which property to rent, it really depends on your own particular needs. The summer cottage does have a better position from which to enjoy the views, including a lovely outside dining area complete with an adjustable sunshade (they seemed to have thought of everything). But the floorplan in the apartment might work better for families wanting separate and private sleeping areas. And the low ceiling is not really a problem unless you are over 6 feet 2 inches which is my height.

I suppose it is also important to talk about what the property "is not". It is not a luxury five star hotel, if that is what you are looking for. It is a farm, and it will have farm sights, sounds and smells. So, if you can't handle these things, then this property is NOT for you. But if you want an authentic Swiss stay in breathtaking surroundings, then this is the right property for you.

Also on the property is a small music venue where a concert is held one Sunday a month during the warmer weather. I recommend joining this experience.
Owner's Response: Hey Jim & Gang...it was really nice to have you at the Sheepfarm this summer....and even the weather welcomed you so that you could have some BBQ nights with your friends...Hope to see you back sometime soon. Thanks for taking the time to review our property.

Apartment (2nd floor) Sheep Farm, Meerlisachen

Summertime08 Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Review Submitted: August 13, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
Althoug the lake and mountain views are nice from the living room and one of the bedrooms, the windows are quite small. Opening the windows improves the view and the airing of the place, but due to lack of moskito nets on one in the living room this is somewhat limited.

There is no easy direct access to any terrace or outside space from the apartment. As you enter the area towards the entrace you are to pass a railed door (not easy to open for children), then up the metal stairs you get to an outside seating are looking over the farm (not the lake, a bit claustrophobic) and all the dogs kept at the cannel service, hence fences all around - not exactly the nice open farmhouse exerience.... Then you continue up the stairs already inside the building to the second floor. Here comes the surprise if you are taller than 180 cms - as that is the inner hight of the apartment, altough bathroom and kitchen are a bit higher. This is forgotten to be mentioned on any websites. The apartment itself has a bit more furniture than necessary, but generally well furnished, quite cousy. It has a dusty feel to it though due to the large amount of carpeted surfaces. Kitchen was well equiped. Ask clear explanation and demonstration for all household equipments and TV - it took us a while to figure out how things work.

The apartment is generally better and nicer than the cottage also on offer at the farm, but the cottage has direct easy access to an outside grassy sitting area overlooking the lake. However, the cottage has a really ugly built-in bathroom block - a bit like a water block on building sites. It also has relatively few windows not very well located and the sleeping areas are not well arranged - all in one space.

Be aware! Cannel service operated at the farm means lots of fences, constant crossing of gates (not easy to open for children) depending on animal visitors big size dogs, sometimes 20 at the same time (can be scary). The cat house is more pleasant, as it is separated from the yard; a very nice and friendly lady takes care of it. She is also exceptionally good and patient with kids.

Pool is mentioned on website - I would not call it a pool, not suitable for swimming, difficult access from house or cottage, rather a paddling pool for kids, but for them not easy to climb in.

All in all not really good value for money.
Owner's Response: I do not quite understand comments about facts that are mentioned on our website and can be read before renting. A historic Swiss farm house HAS small windows and this can be seen in the pictures. To leave ONE window in the whole apartment without a mosquito net, makes it easier for someone to lean out this window to see the fantastic view in full. Someone CAN see the lake also from the terrace and the bed room, but not full view. Our webpage mentioned that the height of the apartment is lower then 2 meters and not suitable for very tall people. Someone over 2 Meters tall, should look for this information before renting. There is a big FAQ section which is updated regularly. For security, the gates are not easy to open for small children, as small children should be accompanied by parents. There are 8 steps to the terrace and there are two other outdoor facilities to visit and enjoy in a small distance. If someone does not understand how to use SAT-TV and tells us only after 9 days – “because it was not important to them, they say” – then why mention it? We could have very easily solved the problem in minutes, just let us know. The cottage is a “rustic cottage” and not a fancy villa. The bathroom has a toilet and a separate Urinal plus a shower and a washing machine. Taste is an individual thing and a lot of people are happy to have TWO separate rooms to use individually at the same time, specially if the place has more then 2 people. The cottage has windows on the most beautiful parts. The sleeping area can accommodate up to 6 people and can be divided into two separate rooms for more privacy. Pool service is discontinued as the nearby lake is easy to access and free of charge. We have accommodated a lot of very pleased guests over the years and must mention again, we DO NOT advertise as a fancy hotel. A farm cottage is a farm cottage. Our property, centrally located is ideal for people who want to explore sights all over Switzerland. We have very quiet nights and our morning starts at 7.00 am (working farms in summer at 5.00 am – hotels usually at 6.00 am) So it is only a matter of choosing the right location to suite your agenda.

Great location - pity about the property

Stack Longwell Green/Sth Glos/England
Review Submitted: July 24, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
Although this property is advertised as being a "Sheep Farm" in reality it is a boarding kennels and cattery with the cottage sandwiched between the two. Every morning we were woken up at 7 am when the pack of over 20 dogs was taken out for a walk. Not the ideal way to have a relaxing holiday!
The cottage is a two storey converted barn. The upper floor has a lounge area with a great view over Lake Lucerne and Mount Pilatus and an adjoining sleeping area which could be separated from the lounge by a folding door. The sleeping area contained a very large, comfortable four poster bed and a pull out sofa bed. The lounge area had two pull down beds. Although this would sleep 6 it wasn't an ideal arrangement , especially if children are involved.
TV had over 100 channels but only CNN in English.
From the lounge a staircase goes down to the kitchen area but at the bottom of the stairs is a shower cubicle and two toilet stalls such as you find in a public toilet. Anyone using the shower would be in full view of anyone passing between the lounge and kitchen. A small investment in some walling would have created a bathroom.
Kitchen was well equipped but I was concerned about the electrical safety. From one plug an extension lead led to an electric heater which was connected to another extension to various appliances. Similar training wires were also in other places around the kitchen and the upstairs area. In particular I felt that this would be unsafe if children are present.
Outside there is a small terrace are with plenty of garden furniture with a fabulous view over the village, Lake Lucerne and Mount Rigi. This was a perfect place to spend a long summer evening.
This is a great location for touring the area and even further afield using the amazing Swiss railway network. Hourly service in each direction from the nearby station with easy connections in Lucerne and Arth-Goldau. Forget the car the Swiss public transport system takes you everywhere.
At the end of your stay you have to clean the property or pay a separate charge for cleaning and you have to pay for every garbage bag used.
Overall we feel that the property did not live up to expectations and can only be best described as "acceptable". Our impression was that the rental property came a poor third in importance to the owners after the animals and the country music venue that is also part of the site.
Owner's Response: Due to severe health problems of my husband, we had to transfer our Sheep Farm to another income. We live in a prime location; so our former concert barn became a holiday cottage and the sheep stable, a concert venue, where we promote high quality concerts 1 x per month – Sunday afternoon, finished by 6.00 pm - a hobby and only a small part of our private interest. Dogs - in addition to our pre-reserved 4-legged customers, we had to take over some dogs from another place where they had an emergency health issue. There is complete silence every evening from 8.30 pm until 7.00 am. Where else can you get nights like that, without traffic, trains, restaurants, bars or drunk people coming home late. Sleeping second room has also a fold out sofa bed – so in each of the two sofa beds could sleep 1 or 2 persons but – yes, the cottage is ideal for 4 people and everything else can be done, but is not what we highly recommend. TV – we live in a German speaking area, so TV-Channels are mostly in German. There is CNN and two News/business channels in English and we do have DVD’s available – which we do not charge for. Unfortunately people have taken DVD’s with them, so they are provided upon request only. Shower – has frosted doors plus a solid wrap around curtain allowing absolute invisibility of someone taking a shower. Plus there is a solid door between the kitchen/washroom/bathroom/shower area. Because of the washing machine & the hot water tank in this corner, a firm wall is not possible and also not required. Kitchen - In the kitchen are many different machines and each family has different needs. Normally the cleaning crew unplug all these appliances – so new guests can plug in what they require. Unfortunately it was overlooked. Transport - we do have an equal amount of guests with cars as with trains and parking space is always available and free of charge. Cleaning – All the extra costs are clearly marked on our website and in the contracts. It is common in Switzerland, that a self contained apartment is charging an end cleaning fee - also a mandatory fee for each garbage bag used. A “basic cleaning” of the rentors when leaving is expected, f.e. dishes cleaned. We do provide quite many things that are not common in other places. Privacy - we do want to leave the renters their privacy but we are open to any help any time during business hours if they ask us.

Dear Irene & Georg,Our stay at your cottage last May (2002) was one of our best and most memorable vacations. Sarah & Emily still talk about the cottage and they loved all the dogs (Tschäsi was their favorite!). Emily, now 4, often asks if we can go to 'Swisserlenze' for the weekend!! The cottage was exactly as you described on the web site; it was very charming, comfortable and had all the comforts of home. Eating outdoors looking at the beautiful scenery was truly a highlight. The cottage was an excellent base for day trips, and Georg's weather predictions were 100% accurate. Many, many thanks to you for all the excellent advice via email before we arrived. You helped make the trip such a success. We really appreciated your recommendations to see things that were off the tourists' path! We've been recommending the cottage to our friends. You live in a beautiful part of the world and we thank you for sharing it. All the best to you and George;
