Winter in Lauterbrunnen:
Lauterbrunnen is in the middle of the Jungfrau Ski Region. On the right side of the valley, is the ski region of Mürren/Schilthorn, easily accessible by new cable car (Dec 06) from Lauterbrunnen. The train to the ski region of Wengen / Männlichen / Kleine Scheidegg / Grindelwald, on the left side, also departs from Lauterbrunnen. All of these trains are included in the sports pass.
The world-famous panorama of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau can be seen from almost every spot in the Jungfrau Ski Region. 44 trains, cable cars, chair- and ski lifts bring you up to 213 km of ski piste. But it's not only for skiing, the hills offer 50 km of sledging pleasure, 100 km hiking and cross-country skiing. For non skiers a hike and sledge pass is available for 2 or more consecutive days at a reduced price. Snowshoe trekking is also available. In Sulwald, above Isenfluh, is a well marked Snowshoe path (approx. 2 h).
Paragliding and Heli-Skiing are also available.
Spring/Summer in Lauterbrunnen:
In Spring and Summer time, there are infinite possibilities for hiking and mountain biking and, of course the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are always in view! All abilities are well catered for. In addition, there is White Water Rafting, Paragliding, Base and Bungee Jumping and Mountaineering all in the surrounding areas. Sailing is available on the lakes at Interlaken (Thun and Brienz) with the stunning backdrop of the mountains.
Summer sporting highlights include the Inferno Triathlon (Thun - Schilthorn) and Inferno Half-Marathon (Lauterbrunnen - Schilthorn), in mid-August and Jungfrau-Marathon (Interlaken - Lauterbrunnen - Kleine Scheidegg), at the beginning of September with the runners being visible from the balcony. There is also summer sledging available for the children at Pfingstegg (Grindelwald).
Out and about:
The revolving restaurant at the top of the Schiltorn should not be missed, neither should the view from Winteregg. There are also lovely cafes and bars locally and in Gridelwald and Interlaken. More contemporary eating places are available in Thun. There are great cycle trails and hiking paths for all abilities so why not try the Eiger trail or just a gentle stroll by the river? Or take the bikes up to Mürren and cycle back down to Lauterbrunnen valley with the same breathtaking views. Excellent local produce is available such as cheese and hams and bread. Why not have fun with a Swiss Fondue. The lakes and Interlaken are only 8 miles away and have several lidos and beaches and together with the pool in Lauterbrunnen and the Alpine centre in Mürren, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water. The helicopter station is 300m away. A trip over the snow covered Eiger at any time of year is truly amazing.
Ski:
Lauterbrunnen is a great base to explore the Jungfrau Ski Region. There are 45 mountain trains, cable cars, chair and ski lifts, with 213km of pistes for skiers and boarders. Also 100km of winter hiking and X-country paths, and 50km of sledge runs. From the apartment you can take the bus to Lauterbrunnen station in 5 minutes, then train to access skiing above Wengen, or take bus to Schilthorn cable car in 7 minutes to access Mürren skiing .Grindelwald can be reached from Kleine Scheidegg (wonderful views) or drive there in 20 minutes. For the adventurous skier there is the Lauberhorn run above Wengen, or the wonderful 16km long run from the top of the Schilthorn back to Lauterbrunnen, rated as one of the best runs in the world with stunning views, by the Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard magazine. The Sunday Times chose the pistes at Mürren as having some of the best scenery in the world. Excellent English-speaking ski-schools are based in Wengen and Mürren.
