Leisure Activities:
Kalkan itself only has a small pebbly beach hence it has not attracted mass tourism however in and around the bay there are beach clubs which are rock gardens cut into the hillside. They all provide sunbeds with umbrella's and have a bar/restaurant. Water sports such as water skiing, jet ski bikes, banana boat rides are all available from the clubs and are reasonably priced. Kaputas Beach, which is a beautiful shingle cove is only a 10 minute drive by taxi and Patara beach, 18 km of golden sand, is 15 minutes away. From the harbour you can hire your own boat for the day, or join a larger party and cruise around the islands and bay stopping at the secluded coves and beaches for a swim, catch your own fish and have them BBQ'ed for lunch on board!
Places to Visit:
Saklikent Gorge is approximately 35 minutes from Kalkan, Turkey's deepest gorge, with the coldest mountain water you will ever encounter. Xanthos, Letoon, Tlos &Patara are all ancient Lycian ruins which are worth visiting and are all easily accessible from Kalkan. Drive up into the Taurus mountains and take in the wonderful views and visit the local villages such as Islamlar which is renowned for its trout farms and Berzigran which lies in a fertile plain some 1500 mtrs above sea level. Day trips to places such as Kekova, the sunken village, Dalyan Delta, which are a little further away can be arranged locally in the village as can private car hire. The Kalkan market takes place every Thursday where you will find a vast variety of copy designer goods from Versace jeans to Gucci handbags, linen, silver jewellery, watches, hand made local pottery and every conceivable spice, flavoured tea and of course Turkish delight!
Entertainment:
There is an unlimited choice of restaurants in Kalkan. You can enjoy the nearest thing to home cooked traditional Turkish food to the most sophisticated international food and ambience you will find at home. There are numerous roof top restaurants which offer the opportunity to eat outside in the evening literally under the stars without the need for cardigans or jumpers!. If you are not hungry there is a varied selection of bars where you can enjoy a drink and be entertained by just watching the world go by. For the teenagers, and the young at heart, there are also a few late night music bars with dancing which stay open until the last customer leaves.
