The Whites, as they are known, have a series of alpine huts along the trails providing shelter for hikers. They are operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club. The hills offer hikes for all levels, from easy walks to strenuous hikes.

This area is known for its maple syrup and there are several sugarhouses in the area where the boiling process is demonstrated. Pick up some of the local product from the maple orchards to take home and enjoy it drizzled over pancakes and waffles.

Skiing

The White Mountains offer superb winter snow sports, particularly around the well-known Bretton Woods area. Downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding are very popular sports.

Places to Visit Near White Mountains, New Hampshire Canterbury Shaker Village

This historic village is a national historic landmark and museum with 25 restored simple Shaker buildings along with gardens, ponds and forests. Learn the history of the religious Shaker community and see craft demonstrations of life in the village.

Franconia

This is one of the main towns near your White Mountains holiday home and has many museums and sights of interest. The New England Ski Museum and the Old Man of the Mountain Museum are both full of fascinating memorabilia and exhibits. The Franconia Heritage Museum is like visiting great-grandma's house with its authentic furnishings. There is also an aerial tramway with great views across Flume Gorge.
