Set in the foothills of the nearby mountains and amongst the many fruit orchards that the region is renowned for, Albatera is a quiet area and an ideal setting for those who wish to relax and experience a less ‘touristy’ holiday, slightly off the beaten track.
The most important monument and main focal point in Albatera is the Catholic church of Santiago Apostol, which was built in the baroque style in 1727. The church is the main building in a well-kept town square, which has a number of smaller side streets running from it, each harbouring a tempting array of local businesses such as bakeries, tapas bars, cafe bars and shops. July is one of the best times of year to visit Albatera, as it is the month of the annual fiesta, and will allow you to join in the fun with the friendly locals.
Albatera is close to the beaches of the Orihuela Costa, and though some public transport is available, the use of a hire car is strongly advised for this semi-rural setting. The town can also serve as an effective base for a golfing holiday, with no less than five courses within close reach of the town, and another one planned for the end of 2009.

A holiday in Albatera provides you with plenty of opportunity for day trips and visits to other areas of the Orihuela municipality. Historical Orihuela Town (14km) should be at the top of your list, and is filled with a number of well-preserved palaces, churches and cathedrals. The beaches of the Orihuela Costa are also just 30-40km away, with La Zenia (40km) and neighbouring Playa Flamenca (39km) two of the best options.

Albatera and the surrounding region receives over 300 days of sunshine every year, with summers long and hot, and warm temperatures to be found even in winter. Early spring is a particularly good time for a visit, when the climate is pleasant without being overbearing, and the sandy stretches of the Orihuela Costa are not overly crowded.

Visitors to Albatera have two main flight options to get there from the UK. The first requires flying to Murcia – San Javier Airport (MJV), then making a 60km journey to Albatera.
