Holidaymakers looking to get away to a hot climate at an affordable price need look no further than the Alcoy area in Spain. Located in the southern eastern Spanish province of Alicante, this is a fascinating area with plenty of interesting things to do and see. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, apartments, villas, hostels and B&Bs.
The Alcoy area is surrounded by picturesque mountains and hikers and horse riders will enjoy the wonderful scenery all around. The area is also well suited for cycling and mountain biking. There are several excellent golf courses in the province including Oliva Nova Golf and Ifach Golf Club.
The coastal towns of Benidorm, San Juan and Alicante are less than an hour away and offer sandy beaches and a chance to swim in the Mediterranean Sea. Holidaymakers can try a variety of watersports on the coast such as surfing, diving, water skiing, wind surfing and paragliding. Mount Tossal Theme Park in Alicante offers rock climbing opportunities as well as other games.
There are a few restaurants, bars and cafes in the area offering traditional Spanish fare and good local wines. Several shops can be found in the area selling arts, crafts and locally made confectionary as well as shops selling other souvenir items. Self catering holidaymakers can visit the local markets, where they can purchase fresh fruit, vegetables and meat.
Alcoy has many interesting historic buildings that are well worth visiting including the 12th century Castillo de Barchell and the 13th century Torre de Na Valora. The town also has some religious buildings of interest such as the Hermitage of St. Anthony the Abbott, the Convent of Saint Agusti and the Catholic Church of Santa Maria.
There are various galleries and museums in the region with the Archaeological Museum in Alcoy itself. Another good place to visit is the city of Alicante, where there are more historic buildings such as the Castle of Santa Barbara and St Mary’s Church. Alicante also has some beautiful scenic views and includes a nature park and a marine park.
The warmest time of the year to visit the Alcoy area is generally July and August when the average high is approximately 27 degrees centigrade. The summer is very dry with any showers very quickly passing. Even the winter months are quite mild with temperatures rarely falling below 10 degrees centigrade.
Alicante Airport (ALC) is less than an hour’s drive from Alcoy and has flights to and from other Spanish cities as well as international destinations. Flights arrive here from Amsterdam, Belfast, Birmingham, Brussels, Geneva, Gothenburg, London, Moscow and Paris amongst other European cities. There are several car hire firms located here including Auriga, Avis, Centauro, Europcar and Goldcar Rental.
