Things to do on holiday in Almirida, Crete

Archaeologists have discovered a range of 5th century tombs from the ancient Foinikes era. The wonderful mosaics which adorn the entrances to the tombs have been wonderfully preserved, and are well worth visiting from any of the self catering accommodation in Almirida. As with much of Crete, Almirida has a wealth of natural treasures too. The short walks to the Gorge of St Nikolas and the Diktamo Gorge as well as the 250 caves which are scattered along the coast are magnificent places to explore.

Walking from an Almirida apartment or villa is a hugely rewarding activity as there is just so much to see. Remnants of ancient walls, WWII tunnels and islets covered in migratory bird species are your reward for your efforts, especially if you head around the Bay of Almirida. The woodland behind the village is some of the only unspoilt woodland in Crete, and for much of the year, the only sounds to be heard there are the footsteps of fellow walkers or the soft song of birds. Mountain bikes can also be hired from vendors in the village, so you can set out into the hills at a more vigorous pace.

The thin, sandy beach which lines the whole of the bay is not only the focal point for visitors and locals during the day. In the evenings, the tavernas, cafes, bars and shops are the main social centres in the village, where people congregate to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and catch up with friends. The beach is safe for children, as it slopes gently into the warm waters of the Mediterranean. There is also a windsurfing school for those who would like to try their hand.

Chania is the largest town in the Almirida area, and if you are staying in a self catering apartment in Almirida, you will almost certainly do much of your shopping in Chania. It is a very beautiful town, whose original centre is home to a disproportionate number of excellent historical monuments and fascinating buildings spanning the whole of Crete’s history.

Located just a few miles down the road, you can be settling into an apartment in Almirida within just a few hours of leaving home. Direct flights to Chania are easy to find during the summer, but in the winter months, you may be routed through Athens.
