Andros, The Bahamas - Andros, a getaway for the nature lover.

Andros Island, Bahamas is a treat for any traveller who enjoys nature, watersports, uncrowded beaches and time to relax.

This largely uninhabited island is fun to explore, some say it is like going back in time to visit our little villages and interact with the island people, many of whom depend upon the sea for a livelihood and hand craft straw baskets, beautiful enough to adorn any home. A local delicacy is the land crab, which emerge during the summer months; fun to catch, then boil and delicious to eat.

The famous blue holes of Andros are wonderful for a fresh water dip. These inland blue holes are mysterious, vast circular holes cut into the limestone rock, surrounded by the pine forests of Andros. Ocean blue holes are another adventure to explore with a trained guide and a scuba tank. The thrill of swimming through vast underground halls and sailing through cracks in the rock is exhilarating.

The aqua marine ocean is a joy to behold and immersing yourself into the gin clear water is a magical experience. Folklore advises one to swim with the pull of the outgoing tide and feel all your aches and pains be soothed away.

Swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving on the Andros barrier reef are the sports of choice for most of our visitors, however reef and flats fishing are the number one activities for many.

At night the sky puts on a show for free, unspoilt by the lights of civilization, the big dipper and all his friends illuminate the midnight blue skies. Constellations are easy to identify and shooting stars a common occurrence.

Artists adore the island's beauty and the vibrancy of the colours. A local handcrafted fabric named Androsia, reflects the gorgeous island experience. A visit to the batik works could be a learning opportunity, as you can watch each of the processes which result in their artistic renditions.

The untamed and largely unexplored interior of Andros is the home to birds, both migratory and local species. Their songs fill the forests and the listener feels the joy of being alive.

Here on Andros the 'getaway from it' all pledge really does ring true, so true that so many of our visitors return year after year. But hush, don't tell everyone as we don't want it to change.
