Athens’ main port, Piraeus, is the best place from which to head out into the Greek Islands. There are a huge range of ferries running to and from Athens, making the Aegean, Cyclade and Saronic Islands are all within easy reach of a day trip from Athens.

There is never a bad time to take accommodation in Athens. During June, July and August, temperatures reach into the mid 30’s (˚C) on a daily basis, but with the idyllic conditions come large crowds of tourists, which although you will not notice them from your private, self catering Athens apartment, you certainly will when trying to explore the bigger attractions in the city. Spring and autumn are still very warm, yet the majority of the tourist crowds have dispersed. Even during December and January, temperatures remain above 10˚C during the day.

Athens Airport itself is one of the most modern and luxurious in Europe, located 20km from the centre of the city itself. Standard taxi costs from the airport into the city centre are in the region of 25 Euros, and there is a direct train route from right next to the airport terminal if you would prefer to keep transfer costs down.
