Azeitao is a small, attractive village that is located 14km from the city of Setubal. Separating the two destinations is the Serra da Arrabida Natural Park, meaning Azeitao attracts a combination of nature lovers and those who want to be on the fringes of the city, but not in the heart of the action. The town is also a food and wine lovers’ paradise, with a number of excellent seafood restaurants and wine cellars that are open to the general public for tasting sessions.

Things to do in Azeitao, Portugal

Azeitao is primarily known for its gastronomy and its vineyards – two things that go hand in hand, especially when on holiday. Although many visitors to Azeitao will be self-catering in their holiday rental accommodation, at visit to at least one local seafood restaurant is a must. Prices are relatively low and quality is especially high in the town’s eateries. Those who want to skip dinner may wish to head to one of the town’s wine cellars, where you can try and buy top local wines – again at bargain prices.

The Serra da Arrabida Natural Park covers the nearby Arrabida Hills, and provides plenty in the way of outdoor options. Walking and hiking are always popular, though some people will be happy with simply relaxing on the secluded beaches of Figueirinha and Portinho da Arrabida. A fire damaged a significant part of the park in 2004, but efforts have been made to not only restore it, but to make it even better and more attractive to visitors.

Golf is also big business in this area of Portugal, with the nearest course being the Campo de Golfe da Quinta do Peru, just 7km up the road. There are several other courses within the local area, and the use of a hire car will allow you to visit as many or as few as you like during your stay in Azeitao.

Places to visit on holiday in Azeitao, Portugal

A visit to Setubal is a must during a vacation in Azeitao, and the capital of the municipality has plenty to offer, including historic monuments, art galleries, museums, and a busy nightlife (especially at the weekends). Another location worth a look is Sesimbra (14km), a picture-postcard fishing village that is sometimes sadly overlooked by tourists, but has a number of excellent restaurants.

Azeitao has a Mediterranean climate, with summer temperatures typically between 20C and 25C, and winter temperatures generally between 10C and 15C, though temperatures outside of these brackets are not uncommon. July and August are the busiest months for bookings here, so get in early if you plan to visit during the summer.

Lisbon Airport (LIS) is the closest airport to Azeitao, being 40m to the north of the village, and over the magnificent Bridge 25 de Abril, which takes vehicles over the Tejo River. The airport receives flights from UK locations such as London Heathrow (British Airways) and Manchester (Bmibaby), to name but two.
