Azoia is an unspoilt paradise, combining traditional Portuguese life with the stunning mountain scenery of the foothills of the Sierra de Sintra. These hills offer many opportunities for hiking and exploring, with a number of churches, monasteries and castles to be found in the region.

If you head towards the coast, just a short distance from the centre of Azoia you will find the Cabo de Roca Lighthouse – Europe’s most occidental point. The lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction, and rises 144 meters high above the coast. An ideal time to visit is just before sunset, when you will be able to take some fantastic photographs.

The beaches along the coast are long, sandy and offer some fantastic surfing opportunities – with the famous beach at Guincho home to the annual windsurfing championships. Many secluded spots can be found if you do a little searching, and some of these hidden sandy stretches can act as your own private beach for the day.

Azoia has a good selection of restaurants and bars. The Windmill Bar is a recommended spot that is both cosy and romantic spot and offers great views. The village also has a daily market and a respectable selection shops, cafes and other basic amenities.

The towns and villages nearby offer plenty for visitors. Sintra (14km) is a world heritage town that is home to an 8th century Moorish castle, Colares (5km) is a renowned wine-producing area, and Penedo (3km) is a traditional Portuguese village. Further afield, the capital Lisbon is just 40km away, and this famous city should not be missed when visiting the area.

Azoia and its surrounding area experiences long warm summers, with an average temperature of 26C, and low rainfall. Due to its proximity to the coast, a sea breeze keeps the area from becoming too humid. Temperatures are coldest from December to February, but below 10C during the daytime is still a rare occurrence.

Flights to Azoia, Portugal

The easiest way to get to your holiday accommodation in Azoia from the UK is by flying direct to Lisbon Airport (LIS), then renting a car for the remainder of the 40km. This will also then give you flexibility to explore the area and make the most of its many beaches and other attractions.
