There are over 300km of walking trails and over 200km of cycling routes and even arrange of Nordic walking routes that weave through the forests, making it an absolute treat for nature lovers and those that enjoy outdoor sports of almost any nature. If you would like to spot nature, and are struggling under your own steam, there are some fantastic guides in the Bavarian Forest, providing guided tours to the habitats of bison, lynx, boars and wolves, to name just a few of the beasts calling the Bavarian Forest home. There is also a 7km observation path with hides around what is usually a good spot for wildlife.
There are a huge range of Bavarian Castles, manors and palaces to explore from a holiday rental in the Bavarian Forest. In fact, the Bavarian Forest has the highest concentration of castles and stately homes in Europe. The famous Karner in Chammuenster is a staggering, and quite eerie attraction, filled with skulls and bones dating back to the Middle Ages. There are even a host of art galleries and museums in the area, documenting the lifestyles and culture of the region.
Winter sees skiers flocking to the Bavarian Forest, especially the Grosser Arber, the highest mountain in the area. There are a huge amount of off-piste skiing, as well as many miles of cross-country skiing trails.

The town of Grafnau is known as the gateway to the Bavarian Forest, and a fantastic place to visit at any time of year. The Salt Carriers Festival or Saeumerfest celebrates over 600 years of life in the region, and the weekly market is a perfect place to visit to enjoy local delicacies and explore the many craft shops selling amazing pieces from the Bavarian Forest.

The climate in the Bavarian Forest is wonderfully mild. During the summer months, temperatures reach a maximum of around 32˚C in the middle of the day, easily cool enough for walking, riding, cycling and climbing in the Bavarian Forest. The winter months can be cold, but with less people and less foliage, wildlife spotting can be easier and just as exciting as it is during the summer months.
