Located on the south-eastern slopes of the Sierra de Gador mountain range, Berja is a rural and traditional Spanish town where locals far outnumber tourists. Although facilities within the town are good, perhaps the biggest selling point of Berja is its location. 25km one way is the Sierra Nevada National Park, whilst 25km in the other direction are the beaches of the Costa de Almeria. There are few other places in South Spain that offer such diversity in such a short space, making Berja a great location from which to explore this unspoilt region.

Berja has a strong history, and was an important town in Roman times, when it was known as Vergis. The local way of life has remained largely the same of the years, and Berja remains a small town that offers opportunities for a rural holiday in the Alpujarra Mountains of Andalucía.
Within the town are a decent amount of facilities, including small supermarkets, shops, cafes, and restaurants, so whether you plan to spend your holiday solely self-catering, or if you decide to eat out on a regular basis, you will not be short of choice. Tapas bars can be found in their droves in the town, with most providing free sharing plates when you purchase a drink. Berja has been a wine production area since the 16th century, and trying the local offerings is a must.
Around town are several historical sites, including 12th and 13th century Arabic baths, and despite its rural location, Berja is also within close reach of a number of attractions. This includes a water park and a number of golf courses. The surrounding mountainside also offers an abundance of activities to pursue, including horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, walking and bird watching.
Places to visit on holiday in Berja, Spain
Visitors to Berja are almost spoilt choice with regards to other places to visit in the region. Beach lovers have plenty sandy stretches to choose from, with Roquetas de Mar (49km) one of the best and most visited resorts in Andalucía. In the opposite direction are the beautiful mountain villages that lie on the fringes of the National Park, such as Ugijar (27km) and Valor (34km), which offer more great outdoor pursuits options.

Berja, Almeria receives plenty of sunshine throughout the year, so any time is good for a visit. July and August are the hottest months, when temperatures peak at around 30C. Winter months are understandably cooler, but far from cold, with a daily average of 12C.

Almeria Airport is the closest airport to Berja, being located 74km away. Thomas Cook Airlines are one of the main operators to this route, running regular flights from Birmingham, Manchester and London Gatwick throughout the summer. The drive from airport to accommodation takes just over an hour.
