Berlin has an excellent (and punctual) train and subway system that allows you to traverse the city quickly and easily. The first destination of many people’s list is usually the Brandenburg Gate – the triumphal arch that is one of Europe’s most famous landmarks. Also within the borough of Mitte are Museumsinsel (Museum Island) – an island in the Spree River that houses a number of top museums, and the Reichstag building – the first parliament of the German Empire.

When it comes to entertainment, Berlin has a diverse range on offer, to cater for all ages and tastes. There are many bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs around the Mitte borough, and the city is also well-known for its theatres, with the Deutsches Theater in Mitte one of the most famous. When it comes to shopping, Friedrichstrasse is the place to head for.

Berlin Zoo is the oldest and most well-known of its type, and is located in Tiergarten. With around 15,000 animals it is one of the biggest and most popular zoo’s in the world, and should be high up on anyone’s ‘to-do’ list when visiting the capital.

With so much to see and do in Berlin it is unlikely that you will have much spare time to venture outside of the capital city during your stay. Effort should be made, however, to see the whole city, and not just the Berlin-Mittte borough. Popular options include the castles and gardens of the Brandenburg suburb, the lakes and woodlands of Kopenick, and the medieval streets of Spandau.

Berlin is a popular tourist destination throughout the year, and will provide a memorable experience whether you travel in the chills of winter or the heat of summer. Like many European countries, June, July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures often between 20C and 25C. December, January and February are the coldest months, as the mercury heads towards zero – but when the snow falls it can give a magical appearance to the capital, and provide an equally as good (if not better) experience.
