Beynac et Cazenac - Beynac France Travel Guide
The Dordogne region of France has long been a destination for travellers who love out of the way unspoiled landscapes dotted with chateaux, meandering rivers, green hills, and medieval villages. This region is known as Perigord to the local inhabitants. After all, it was only during the days of Napoleon when the department was given the name Dordogne. Change takes time in the “compagne” and those who come here discover that sometimes it seems that time stands still altogether.
Beynac is situated in the heart of the Perigord Noir, noted for its high concentration of chateaux, bastides, perfectly restored medieval villages and verdant landscapes. The town of Sarlat, known as France’s jewel of renaissance and medieval architecture, is only 10 kilometres away. This is the perfect base for exploring this historically important and visually fascinating corner of Europe.
Restaurants;
There is no lack of restaurants in the area and you may already be aware that the Dordogne is a culinary capital of France. Black truffles, fois gras, and duck confit are the big attractions. If you’ve never had duck in France, try it here. Below are some restaurants that we personally enjoy and recommend.
–La Petite Tonnelle, Beynac. Relaxing terrace dining. The menu has great variety and the food and service are excellent.
–La Belle Etoile, Roque Gageac. Elegant setting, attentive staff, great presentation.
–Le Home, Belves. A charming place in a charming village, amiable service, great value and great dining al fresco
–La Petite Manoir, Sarlat. Gracious service at a renovated Sarlat manor house
Markets;
Don’t forget to visit the Market Days in the Dordogne to sample a rich slice of local life. Our favourites include strawberries, mushrooms, olives, walnut cakes, spices, handmade jewellery, pottery, antiques, and French tablecloths. If you are hungry, find the stand selling roast chicken and potatoes. Most markets close by noon so go early. We have starred our favourites below.
Sunday - St. Cyprien*
Monday - Beynac (mid-June to late August)
Tuesday -Cenac
Weds - Sarlat
Thursday - Monpazier*, Domme
Friday - Roque Gageac
Saturday - Sarlat* (all day)
Must Do’s in Beynac;
–Take a canoe trip down the Dordogne. Make your route from Carsac to Beynac, or a nice shorter trip is from Cenac to Beynac.
–Hike the cobblestone path from the river to the Chateau. It’s steep but you must do it at least once.
–Enjoy a self-guided tour of Beynac Castle from 12:30 pm- 1:30 pm spending as much time as you want roaming in and around the 12th century Chateau de Beynac.
–Tour Beynac’s medieval rival Chateau de Castelnaud which houses the Museum of Medieval Warfare, an impressive collection of weapons and artillery pieces. You also get great postcard views of Beynac.
–Take a quiet stroll around Beynac at twilight.
–Splurge for a hot air balloon ride, pricey but spectacular!
