There are many fantastic places to visit in Italy, but one place not to be missed is the city of Brindisi. Located on the south east coast of Italy by the Adriatic Sea it has many interesting places for visitors to enjoy. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, apartments, B&Bs and campsites.
There are some wonderful beaches ideal for families and couples looking to relax in the sun that are just a short journey from the city. Various watersports can be tried here too such as water skiing, sailing, wind surfing, diving and swimming. It is a very scenic area with lovely places to walk or cycle with vineyards and olive groves inland as well as the coastline and harbour.
The region of Puglia has numerous golf clubs including par 72 18-hole courses near Lecce and Taranto. Families with children may like to take a day out visiting places such as Castellana Grotte with its dinosaurs or a safari at the zoo near Fasano. Those with a love of the water can try one of two waterparks near Foggia in the north of the region.
The city has plenty of shops and a wide range of products to buy such as pottery, fabric, leather, cosmetics, jewellery and shoes. There are many bars, cafes and restaurants in the area with locally produced wines and traditional Italian fare in abundance here.
There are many museums to visit in the province including the Archaeological Museum of Brindisi. Many old and interesting buildings can be seen in the area such as castles, monuments, temples and churches. Some of the religious sites here include the Cathedral, St Mary of Casale and St Benedict.
Visitors may like to take a trip across the water by ferry from Brindisi to either Greece or Albania. The region of Puglia boasts many other interesting towns and cities such as Gallipoli, Lecce and Alberobello. The small Tremiti islands and the wooded Gargano peninsula, which is a national park, are also popular destinations
This part of Italy benefits from a moderate climate all year round. The hottest time of the year is July and August when average maximum temperatures are approximately 30 degrees centigrade. Whilst December and January is chilly with average highs of about six degrees centigrade there is still usually plenty of sunshine. July generally sees around 10 to 11 hours of sunshine per day and is the driest month of the year, while October is often the wettest.
Airport of Salento in Brindisi has flights from Milan, Rome and Venezia. Ryanair also offer direct flights from London Stanstead. There are buses and taxis located at the airport as well as several car rental firms including Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Maggiore, Sixt and Thrifty.
Palese Airport at Bari is approximately one hour and forty minutes away from Brindisi and has flights to and from various Italian cities as well as other European destinations such as London, Bonn, Munich, Bucharest, Budapest, Prague and Zurich. There are several car hire firms and taxis situated here too.
