Located in the heart of the Rhone Valley wine area, the commune of Cairanne dates back to the 8th century, and is a ‘small but perfectly formed’ option for a holiday rental base in the famous Provence region of France. With ancient buildings to explore, walking trails to enjoy, wine to be sampled and plenty of markets, festivals and other attractions, you will not be short of things to do in Cairanne. You can, of course, simply choose to spend your time relaxing in some of the best holiday accommodation that the region has to offer.
Cairanne has a long and interesting history, and this is evident as your enjoy a walking tour of the village. Cairanne is actually split into two distinct parts; the old village at the top of the hill, and the newer, ‘main’ village down below. In the old village you will find the 12th century ramparts, which date back to the times of the Knights Templar, as well as an 18th century chapel and the imposing Autanne Gate. Some excellent views can be enjoyed from the top of the hill, so make sure you take your camera.
Thanks to extremely fertile land and an excellent climate, Cairanne is best known for its wine production, and enjoying a few vintages is undoubtedly the highlight of many a holiday in the village. A marked wine trail is easy to follow from the village centre, and after learning about the different grape varieties of the region and enjoying a spot of tasting you will almost certainly come away with a few bottles as souvenirs.
Cairanne also has a number of walking and hiking trails that lead to and from its centre, with details of these obtained from the helpful village tourist office. Amenities in Cairanne are basic but adequate, with the Friday morning market and the excellent bistro and wine bar being particular highlights.
If you decide to venture outside of Cairanne you will be presented with a number of options as to what to do and where to go. Haut-Vaucluse department is full of picturesque towns and villages, with tiny Lagarde-Pareol (8km) and impressive Vaison la Romain (11km) being two of the nearest options worth considering, though there are many more.
The beautiful summer weather is what draws many visitors to Cairanne, and if you visit any time between June and early September you are almost guaranteed temperatures above 25°C and plenty of sunshine. May and October can also be pleasant for a visit, and winter temperatures are still relatively mild compared to the UK.
The nearest airport to Cairanne is Avignon-Caumont Airport (AVN), 36km away. Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), 119km, is a larger alternative option, but whichever destination you choose for your flight to France
