Holidaymakers looking for a pretty resort on the Mediterranean will enjoy Cala Girgolu. This is a wonderfully scenic place in the province of Olbia-Tempio on the east coast of Sardinia, which in turn is west of the Italian mainland. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, apartments and B&Bs.
This coastal resort has some delightful beaches ideal for families with young children and couples looking to relax in the sun. Various watersports can be tried here too such as water skiing, sailing, wind surfing, swimming and there are several diving schools on the island. Cala Girgolu is a very scenic area with lovely places to walk with lots of birdlife living in an around the coves.
Golf is quite popular here and there are several courses mainly on the other side of the island in south west Sardinia but the nearest, Puntaldia is only about five kilometres away. There are plenty of places to try mountain biking and climbing too. Fishing is also popular here with the waters around the north east rich with fish and offshore sport fishing trips can be arranged.
A short distance away there are restaurants, bars and markets in the town of Monte Petrosu. Here visitors will be able to buy souvenirs and gifts, while self catering holidaymakers can purchase food and beverages too.
There are many museums to visit on the island including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tortola. Some interesting and ancient buildings decorate the island too including the Roman church of Saccargia. For a fun family day out holidaymakers could visit one of the waterparks here, which are located to the north and south ends of Sardinia.
A ferry takes visitors from Olbia, which is about 15 kilometres from Cala Girgolu, to the Italian port of Genoa. There are many boat excursions on offer in Sardinia including from the port of Palau in North Eastern Sardinia where the trip takes passengers along the Maddalena Arcipelago National Park and very near the Bonifacio strait, in southern Corsica.
Sardinia enjoys plenty of sunshine in the summer months and stays relatively mild in the winter months. The average high temperatures for July and August are 30 degrees centigrade, with 11 hours of sunshine per day in July. Most of the rainfall on the island occurs during the winter although temperatures reach a minimum high in January of 4 degrees centigrade but may be as high as 15C.
Olbia Airport is approximately 30 minutes transfer to Cala Girgolu and has flights to and from mainland Italy and numerous European countries such as UK, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Taxis are available outside the airport as well car hire companies in the terminal building. To get to Cala Girgolu from the airport visitors need to take national route SS 125.
