Lying in the beautiful Dordogne (or Perigord) region of France, in the south west of the country, is the small and peaceful village of Cales. Situated on the River Dordogne this picturesque area has lots of great scenery perfect for spending time exploring by bike or on foot. Some wonderful self catering accommodation in Cales makes this the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday for families, couples and friends alike.
Self catering accommodation in Cales is surrounded by scenic countryside, dominated by the lovely Dordogne River. Boating on the Dordogne is very popular. This is a great place to bring your bicycle, or rent one nearby, and enjoy the country roads and quiet towns and villages which show glimpses of a more traditional life. Many of the older farmhouses, barns and cottages have been lovingly restored and now offer luxurious self catering accommodation, some with swimming pools.
If cycling is not your thing, there are also plenty of nice places to walk that are within reach of your Cales accommodation, or simply sit back and relax and enjoy the views!
Usually quite a sleepy village, Cales comes alive when its time for the traditional village festival, known as Fete Ancien. Many activities take place at this time and you can see how traditional methods were used for things like barrel making and laundry washing! Nearby the village of Tremolat is popular. This sits within the horseshoe of the Dordogne River, known locally as the Cingle de Tremolat. The views over the Dordogne are great from here, plus the village has its own things to see such as two 13th century churches and excellent restaurants. There are often events going on in Tremolat or in the other villages in this part of Perigord.
A little further, though still within easy reach of your Cales self catering accommodation is Bergerac. Great for a day trip or two this town has several attractions. The link with Cyrano de Bergerac is noted with an old statue, and because wine and tobacco are important industries in this part of France there is a tobacco museum. The town is nice to enjoy a walk around or perhaps a meal or a drink. There are always plenty of castles to visit in the vicinity, plus ancient caves and much more as well.
When staying in self catering accommodation in Cales you can enjoy some lovely weather throughout the year. Summer is the most popular time to visit with warm and pleasant temperatures hot enough to enjoy a swim in the pool or in the River Dordogne. Winters are cooler but remain quite mild, and are still good for sightseeing.
The closest airport to your accommodation in Cales is Bergerac, about 40 minutes drive away. This is not a large airport but does serve both Flybe and Ryanair, or try one of those airports further away, such as Bordeaux.
