For those seeking action without participation, this particular area is full of regional and international team sporting events, as well as cultural opportunities in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Given the amount of industry located in the southern area of Wales, architectural heritage is quite an unexpected surprise. Ruins of the areas medieval past surround countryside areas between Cardiff and Swansea like the ruins of Ogmore Castle, as well as many other areas like Barry Castle with parts of its gate remaining. Beaupre Castle is another fine example with construction in the 13th century. This particular structure is most intact of many castles in the southern part of Wales or Western Europe and is second only in size to Windsor Castle. Its unique design gave quick access to many areas of the castle, and its outer lake provided protection from the enemy. Access to the inside is equally fascinating in locations like the castles great hall and walking alongside the building on the restored parapet.
Other worthwhile pursuits on the Glamorgan Coast are spent driving the 10 km heritage coastal region. Rocky cliffs give way to dunes along this area of coastal beauty which is known as a favorite of photographers. This unique area is wonderful for a drive. History and nature are perhaps two of the most important areas of interest on the Glamorgan however ample time should be spent within the confines of its many villages. Many allow visitors to walk amongst narrow streets. This quaint charm is witnessed in areas like Brynmenyn, as well as Garw Valley with its historic church and Coity with a castle standing in the villages square.
