Carnac has two main draws for tourists: its stones and its beaches. The stones that we refer to are the Carnac Stones, an extensive display of around 3,000 Neolithic menhirs that were erected by the pre-Celtic people of the region around 5,000 years ago. The stones are the largest collection of their type in the world, and are placed in three main sites around the town. Learning about the different alignment patterns and their historical significance is the first task for many a visitor to Carnac.

In far more recent times Carnac has gained in popularity as a seaside resort, and the town has become a popular alternative to the tourist-packed resorts of the French Riviera. The beaches in Carnac number five in total, with La Grand Plage being the biggest and most popular of the lot. Plage Men Du and Beaumer are two quieter options that lie just to the east of the town.

As with almost anywhere on the planet that draws tourist crowds, Carnac has significantly developed its other amenities and attractions. A good selection of bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs can be found around the beachfront, keeping visitors of all ages happy until the early hours of the morning.

Those seeking a holiday away from man-made attractions should consider heading out into the woods, with the countryside that surrounds Carnac being ripe for a whole spectrum of outdoor pursuits.

Places to visit on holiday in Carnac, France

Although Carnac has a lot to see and do, dragging yourself away from the town is a must, as there are a number of other places well worth visiting just a short distance away. The medieval town of Auray (15km) is one such spot, whilst Camors is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise 35km to the north. Those seeking a quieter beach spot should consider Erdeven (9km), which is just a ten-minute drive up the road from Carnac.

The weather in Carnac is similar to the weather in Britain, but with slightly warmer summers and milder winters. The period from May to September is the warmest and driest, hence also the busiest time in which to visit. Summer temperatures usually peak at around 29°C, though slightly hotter is always possible.

Travel to Carnac, France

The south of the Morbihan department does not have a lot in the way of airports, especially those that receive flights from international destinations. As a result, the best bet for getting to Carnac is usually a connecting flight to Lorient South Brittany Airport (LRT, 59km) or a direct flight to Nantes Airport (NTE, 147km).
