Carpentras is a large town with a concentrated, ancient centre, which surrounds the town’s most prominent building, the cathedral. Around the main square in front of the cathedral you will find all the best shops, restaurants and cafes of Carpentras, as well as the majority of the most interesting and famous monuments, including the Roman Arc de Triomphe. This is also the location for the weekly Friday market which serves the whole region. If you are there during the correct seasons, you too can sample Carpentras’ finest export; strawberries. The market has been in existence since 1155, and is enormous, filling much of the town with stalls.

During the week from 27th November, the St Siffrein Fair rolls into town, bringing with it all the gastronomic specialities of Carpentras, including the famous black truffles, strawberries, melons and bonbons!

Walking is a favourite activity on a Carpentras holiday, and there are a huge range of marked paths leading away from the village and off into the lush hills. The tourist information centre has maps and trail information, including the routes for a couple of wine tasting walks. Many of these walking trails can be easily and enjoyably completed on horse back or with a mountain bike.

Slightly further afield, the foothills of Mt Ventoux offer the ideal location for para-gliding and mountain climbing.
